Fandom: Heroes of Olympus

Argh.
When Nico opened the door, his first thought was Wow, Bianca would be all over that. because his mind was a gutter of self-loathing masochism and the girl’s black eyes sparkled with mischief that didn’t quite match the ramrod straight posture and the resting bitch-face. She had practically “special ops” written all over her.
“You’re here for Jason, I assume?”
A jerky nod and an extended hand. “Reyna Ramírez-Arellano. You are his room mate?”
Nico shrugged, biting down the passive-aggressive ‘Obviously.’ It was certainly not Reyna’s fault that she looked like a wet dream his dead sister might have had. He shook the offered hand. “Nico. Come in, he should be back in a few minutes.”
“Thank you.”
Reyna took a seat on Jason’s desk chair and refrained from any attempt at awkward small talk. Nico couldn’t help but like her.
If now only Jason could show up. Nico knew for a fact that his shift at the library had ended half an hour ago, but he also knew that Piper McLean had a habit of returning books just around closing time which was bound to distract Jason. Not that he would want to say so in front of Reyna ‘Jason’s military girlfriend’ Ramírez-Arellano. So he opted for an annoyed “He tends to be late.”
Reyna snorted. “He always has.”
“Always? How long have you guys been dating?”
“Dating? God, no! – We’ve grown up together. He’s practically the younger brother I never wanted.” She picked up a picture frame from Jason’s desk that Nico had never bothered to look at. It showed an adorable, soaking wet blond boy, no older than six, and three black-haired girls with water guns and triumphant smiles.
Nico couldn’t help a snorting laughter.
Reyna grinned approvingly. “That’s us and our older sisters.”
“That might be the best thing I’ve ever seen.” And that was just a bit pathetic.
Reyna’s grin told him she agreed. With both sentiments. She seemed like she wanted to say something to that effect, but was interrupted by 170 pounds of flailing blond adorableness wrapping themselves around her neck.
“Reyna!” Jason cried in delight. “You're here!”
“Obviously.” Nico rolled his eyes.
Reyna laughed. “No reason for choking me.”
“Sorry.” Jason grinned sheepishly and rightened himself. “So you've already met Nico?”
He attempted to ruffle Nico's hair who dodged the hand expertly and hissed. “Grace!”
The sheepish smile became bigger. “Oh, don't be like that.”
“God, I hate you.”
“No you don't!”
He really didn't. He'd thought he would when this ridiculous Captain America-lookalike had first waltzed into their shared dorm room, all toothy smile, t-shirt stretching over toned muscles and oozing confidence. But it had taken approximately two days to reveal that Jason was a huge dork with a sense of honour bordering on ridiculous, permanently misplaced reading glasses and a scar from trying to eat a stapler as a kid. If it wasn't for his habit of trying to drag Nico to parties or feminist discussion groups, they probably could have been friends. Or something.
“Now kiss.” Reyna's voice was bone-dry. Nico really liked her.
Jason slung an arm around Nico's shoulder and pressed a quick kiss on his hair. Nico punched him in the face.
Reyna laughed.
“Ouch.”
“Seriously, Grace. Not. Cool.” Nico could feel his face burning and turned around, facing the wall and hoping beyond reason, that the others hadn't noticed him turning deep purple.
“Hey. I was just joking around... I didn't-”
Nico hissed. “I know.” When he turned back, Jason was looking at him intently, obviously feeling bad... and maybe a bit sad? What a weirdo. “I just don't like being touched,” he grumbled in the end. Especially not by good-looking guys.
Jason nodded solemnly. “I'm sorry. - Let me buy you a beer?”
“What?”
“Finally!” Reyna got up and rolled her shoulders. “I hope you guys have some proper student bars around here.”
“Of course! My friend Piper recommended this place...” Jason grabbed his coat and held the fucking door open for Reyna. Nico couldn't help but stare.
“Are you coming?” Jason was still holding the door, raising his eyebrows at Nico.
“What?”
Reyna looked back into the room. “You're not planning to leave me alone with that dork, are you?”
“But...” Nico looked from her to Jason and back again. Both were smiling as though nothing about this situation was weird. As if he somehow belonged at a meeting of childhood friends. “I don't...”
“You can write that paper later. You never go out with me.” Jason honest to god pouted. And Reyna rolled her eyes and made a ‘Come on’ gesture. Nico quickly glanced at the childhood picture of the two of them and then, before he could think about it too much, he just got up and followed them outside.
Hazel would be so proud.
Of course, Nico should have been wary the moment Jason had said “my friend Piper”. But he'd been confused and distracted and, thus, he ended up in a frickin' gay bar with Jason 'too handsome for my shirt' Grace and Reyna who was apparently absolutely dandy with the DADT repeal.
Nico wanted to die.
Instead, he watched in fascination (and horror) Jason getting a steady stream of free drinks and Reyna flirting shamelessly with drunk gay guys (and a few girls). At some point, they had attracted an animatedly talking and gesticulating surfer guy who hit it off amazingly with Jason. Reyna despised him in an instant and Nico... Nico tried to drown the urge to jump his bones with Jason's free drinks.
He should have stayed inside, playing Skyrim or something.
Surfer guy (Percy. His name was Percy and he had dropped out of two colleges and had been traveling around from one shitty job to the next.) had one arm slung around Jason's fucking hip. “Bro, we should totally be in a band,” he declared, drunkenly slurring his consonants. Nico still thought he was really hot. He had the worst taste ever.
“Well, you're only missing a guitarist and a drummer. Oh, and someone who can sing.” Reyna had mostly ignored the blooming bromance next to her, but apparently couldn't help herself.
“Dude, I can totally sing!” Percy insisted.
“My sister is a drummer,” Nico piped in without even knowing why. The way Percy's eyes lit up at that comment might even have been worth it. He downed his cocktail to distract himself from that thought.
“Ha, and my sister plays guitar! We could totally do this!” Jason crowed. “I'll write Thalia immediately.”
“She will kill you,” Reyna predicted.
“Maybe. But this is just too good...” Jason fumbled for his phone, but it fell out of his hand almost immediately. A tall blonde girl caught it.
“Here you go. And I'm gonna take that one” She pointed to Percy. “It's way past his bed time. Sorry for... everything. Come on, seaweed brain!”
“Annabeth...” Percy whined, but stood to attention like a devoted (very drunk) puppy. Nico's stomach clenched.
“Good night, Percy!” Reyna smiled and Jason went in for a bone crushing hug.
Percy waved. “It's been great meeting you guys.”
Nico forced himself to not wave back lamely. Instead he turned his focus back onto the next cocktail glass. He really, really needed to forget about this whole night.
Jason put a hand over Nico's. “I think you've had enough,” he said softly.
Nico shook his head. “I...” He could feel himself swaying. “I haven't had nearly enough.”
“Come on, let's go home.”
He could feel Reyna and Jason pulling him to his feet and Nico knew that fighting Captain America and Wonder Woman was futile, but he still tried to squirm his way out of their grip. Unsuccessfully, of course.
They gently pulled him out onto the street and even produced a bottle of water from somewhere. Freaking superheroes-slash-Roman statues.
“Really?” Nico couldn’t help the hissing. It was just so unfair. “You dragged me into this awful place and now, now...” He didn't know what to say. Also, he felt like he might throw up any second. Or start crying like a baby.
Jason sat down next to him on the sidewalk edge. “Hey, Nico...”
“No. Just... No.”
“Tell me what your problem is so I can help you.”
And that just... Nico jumped up, throwing the water bottle at the next wall. “You can't help me! No one can! Believe me, I've tried, but I am fucking gay and it's not gonna stop, it's never gonna stop and you can't fucking help me, asshole!” He was shouting, and, quite possibly, crying.
Reyna was the first to wrap her arms around him, but Jason followed closely. “It's okay,” he whispered and it really, really wasn't. But it was hard to say that while captured in a warm embrace by two people who looked like fucking real-life superheroes.
When Reyna finally pulled back, her face seemed to be sculpted from marble. “We're your friends, you know that, right?”
“I've just met you this evening.”
She shrugged. “I'm a good judge of character.”
Jason still had a hand on Nico's shoulder. “What she wants to say is... If you need us to keep this a secret, we will.” His hand squeezed Nico's shoulder lightly. “Have you ever told anyone?”
Nico wanted to laugh, but everything he could manage was a snort. “No.” He didn't say that he'd seen what coming out had done to Bianca. Or that he really, really didn't want to know how his father would react. Or how his heart was still beating too fast because he'd never actually said those words out loud. But Jason seemed to hear all that nevertheless, because he hugged him again.
For a few seconds, Nico allowed himself to melt into that hug. Then he pushed Jason away. “I... I understand if you want to switch rooms now.”
“Don't be ridiculous!”
Nico could feel an incredible weight lifting from his shoulders that he hadn't known was there. “Oh. Okay.”
Jason laughed and ruffled his hair. Nico swatted at his hand. “I was serious about not liking to be touched, though.”
Jason hesitantly retracted his hand. “Sorry.” Was he… pouting? He really was pouting. Grace was a fucking weirdo.
Reyna giggled. “See what you did there? You broke his little heart.”
“Shut up, Reyna!” With a broad grin, Jason linked arms with her and pushed the other into the air. “Back to the base!”
Reyna groaned and looked back over her shoulder. “How do you even stand this weirdo?”
“I have no idea.” Nico could feel something warm and fuzzy spreading in his stomach and his head becoming impossibly light. God, he really was drunk.
