“Before Noriko and I got married, we had one of our first dates at a concert around here.“ Yamada smiled wistfully. „I had just started teaching, so, naturally, the first thing I heard when we arrived at the concert hall was a whispered 'It's Yamada-sensei!' and 'His girlfriend is really pretty!'“
Makoto laughed dutifully. He'd met students a few times when he was out in the city. He really didn't mind, but on a date... „That must have been awkward.“
Yamada took a sip from his coffee. „We spend the rest of the evening in hiding.“
„Well, it didn't stop her from marrying you, did it?“
„Yes, it could have been worse. - But learn from my mistakes, you've got to be careful when you want to enjoy dating around here.“
Makoto nodded. „I will.“ Mentally, he added an 'If it ever comes to that'. It had been over a year since he'd dared to ask out Chinatsu and that had ended... not so well.
„Good, good.“ Yamada smiled fatherly. „It's about time that you got married, Tachibana.“
Embarrassed, Makoto ruffled his hair. „I... I hope to get married someday.“ At least that was true. Although, at this point, he was pretty sure it would never happen. Ran and Ren had unapologetically declared him the most boring brother in existence. (They had even customised a coffee mug.) His life pretty much revolved around school and Haru...
„Oh, it's so late already! Please excuse me, I have to pick up Haruka.“
Yamada waved, smiling broadly. „Best regards to your lady.“
Makoto could feel his face heat up. „That's not... I mean... See you tomorrow!“ He hurried out because he was already late, not because he desperately wanted to escape from this conversation.
Makoto couldn’t really say that he missed the sea, but on evenings like this, when it was still uncomfortably hot and humid despite it being early November, he missed the steady wind they'd had in Iwatobi. And maybe he also missed the monotonous rolling of the waves and the smell of salt and sun screen that Haru never had been able to wash off completely.
He certainly missed greeting well known faces on their late evening runs and the sense that everything was completely right with the world.
One day, he would get used to running in the city. Until then, he could just enjoy how effortless his steps matched Haru's and pretend.
„Good evening, Tachibana-sensei!“
Reflexively, Makoto greeted back, before his mind had even registered the identities of the third year students who'd just passed them on their own run.
„I have to talk to Kamakura. He's still limping a bit, the doctor should take a look at that,“ he mumbled, looking after the boys.
Haru next to him laughed silently.
Makoto smiled sheepishly. „Sorry. At least they haven't recognised you. You'll never get finished with writing autographs when the students figure out I know you.“
Haru just shook his head and turned into the street that led uphill in direction of their apartment building.
„He, Haru.“
Makoto hadn't even realised that he'd halted. Haru continued for a few steps, then turned around. He raised an eyebrow.
But Makoto had no idea what he wanted to say. 'I kind of miss the sea'? That would be weird. „My colleague thought you're my girlfriend“, he said instead, and, God, that was so much worse.
Haru's eyes widened slightly. „I feel honored.“
Makoto shook his head, laughing at himself. „Don't mock me, I had no idea how to respond to that. Anyway, let's go on.“
They fell into pace easily again. They'd ran together for years, and by now they'd found the perfect tact between Makoto's long, striding steps and Haru's smaller, faster ones. Usually this steady rhythm was all it took to calm down Makoto's thoughts and let him relax after too long days pondering over training regimes and correcting strokes of first years.
He took a deep breath. Step. Step. Exhale. And another breath.
No, Yamada's words still rang in his ears. You have to be careful.
There was nothing he had to be careful about. Well, he still wanted to hide the fact that he was friends with two of Japan's Top Ten swimmers and got family tickets for the Olympics. And, of course, he really didn't want anyone to know that he was stupidly in love with one of them. But there was nothing...
Oh.
That..
Maybe he could be a bit more careful about that.
„Come ooooon! I want a good spot!“ Nagisa demanded, grabbing Rei's hand, and pulling the taller man through the crowd.
Makoto and Haru exchanged glances, before throwing themselves in the next gap in the crowd to catch up to their friends.
Nagisa had decided that they hadn't done anything together in way too long (and Makoto had to agree with him there) and that, thus, they had to go and see the winter illuminations. „The topic this year is 'Ocean'! So much water! And penguins!“ There had been no way to argue with that.
Gou and Rin had planned to join them later, but judging from the crowd that had gathered at six already, Makoto was sure that finding each other would be impossible.
Well, Gou would probably be glad to have a bit of time with her brother who was rolled up in training camp and competitions in Brazil at the moment and hardly ever made it back to Japan.
Nagisa had finally settled on a spot atop the stairs with a beautiful view on the still unilluminated park. He'd placed his head on Rei's shoulder and somehow, Rei's arm had found its way around Nagisa's waist. Makoto smiled fondly. The two of them still made for a cute pair.
Haru shuffled closer to Rei's other side to make room for Makoto.
„Tachibana-sensei! Are you here to see the lights as well?“
„Oh, Goto-kun! Yes, I'm here with some friends. Please enjoy the show!“ The first year student smiled brightly and wished him the same, before turning back to his friends who Makoto couldn’t all recognise. He gave a friendly wave nevertheless and made his way through the crowd to find a spot to Nagisa's left which was farthest away from his students and, incidentally, farthest from Haru.
You've got to be careful.
Haru shot him a quick glance and Makoto mouthed „students“ at him as if that would explain anything. Haru's brows furrowed but he didn't say anything. Instead, he looked straight ahead at the trees vanishing in the dark.
If Makoto hadn't known better, he would have thought Haru had looked hurt.
„Do you have time on the 20th?“ Haru was sitting on the couch and browsing through his mail. He hadn't even looked up to ask that question.
„That's a Saturday? Sure, why?“
„There's this charity function my manager insists I have to attend. You're invited.“
Makoto put down the dishes he'd been washing. „What? Why would I be invited to a function like that?“
Haru raised an eyebrow. „As my Plus One obviously.“
Obviously. Makoto's throat was inexplicably dry. „That's ridiculous.“
„It says 'Plus One' and you are my Plus One.“
Makoto felt as if he'd been stabbed in the chest. Breathing had become incredibly hard all of a sudden. „Haru,“ he said softly. „That's not what that means.“
„My mother says we're practically a two-for-one deal.“
Makoto probably would have laughed if he wasn't so afraid of starting to cry instead. He struggled for words.
Shaking his head, Haru beat him to the punch: „I don't want to go there alone. Come with me. Please.“
„I can't. It... it will look like I'm you date.“
For a moment, Haru stared at him in utter confusion. „So? Your colleague thinks I'm your girlfriend.“
At that, Makoto couldn’t help but laugh. Even to his own ears it sounded like sobbing. „But he doesn't know you. And on that event, there will be all these important people and reporters and... You have to be careful about things like that.“
Haru shrugged. „Why?“
Because the subsequent gossip would be horrible. Because Haru wouldn't get any more sponsor contracts. Because they would write about nothing else than that for months. But of course, none of these very valid reasons actually meant something. Because Haru didn't care. The only things Haru cared about were being able to swim and, apparently, not being alone at that function. And no one would stop Japan's number one chance for Olympic gold from swimming. So that only left... Makoto whimpered. „Because I love you.“
„You shouldn't leave me alone, then.“
The colors in Makoto's view got a bit blurry and he was afraid he might faint on the spot, but there was no going back anymore, was there? „No. No, I love you like... that. Please, don't make me go there, I... I can't.“ He was fine with the longing and the aching and the lying awake at night wondering, but he couldn’t, just couldn't, go to work and explain his students that he wasn't Nanase Haruka's boyfriend again and again.
Haru's eyes had become wide.
„But... if you... Then... I don't understand.“ His face was pale and open and so, so vulnerable.
Makoto bit down on his lip, hard, but he couldn’t stop the tears that were welling up in his eyes. He had ruined it. „I am so sorry.“
Haru shook his head. „If you're in love with me...“ He said that like he couldn't quite grasp the concept. „Why wouldn't you want to be my date?“
Now it was Makoto's turn to stare in utter confusion. „What?“
„Isn't that how it's supposed to work? Dating, kissing, moving in together, something?“
„Yes, but...”
Haru was still furrowing his brows, obviously irritated. „Is the order that important?“
„What... what are you saying?“
Haru got up and walked slowly over to Makoto, wrapping his arms around his waist. „Can I kiss you? Now. Or after that date, if that's the proper order of those things."
Now, the tears really started flowing, but Makoto was laughing nevertheless. Maybe Rin was right, maybe they were clueless fools. „Now works for me.“
