A/N: Das ist wahrscheinlich das selbe Zukunfts-verse wie hier und es ist noch mehr Makoto schwelgt in seiner unerwiderten Liebe. Und Rin hält ihn für einen Idioten. Zurecht.
Makoto couldn’t help it. He had to reach out whenever Haru was close. It was stupid, and unnecessary, and uncomfortably close to torture. But he just couldn’t help resting his hand on Haru’s shoulder whenever he had to squeeze by in their entirely too small kitchen. He just had to offer his hand to help Haru out of the water and, of course, he had to make sure their fingers touched ‘accidentally’ whenever Haru handed him anything.
It was some form of weird magnetism.
And maybe it was eating Makoto from the inside.
He had promised himself that this would stop, time and time again. He had tried dating a girl from work. And Chiharu, the beautiful shop assistant at the supermarket across the road. He’d even gone out on a date with a guy from university, figuring that if he couldn’t be normal, he could potentially live with being gay while not pining after his best friend.
Obviously, it hadn’t worked.
Yusuke had told him he was stupid but that he’d be there if Makoto needed… a distraction.
Makoto hadn’t talked to him since.
And, maybe, just maybe, it was okay.
He could get used to the constant aching. It had been over ten years and it hadn’t killed him so far, so he might be able to just live a nice, long life and die of old age while trying to reach out for Haru’s hand one last time. That didn’t sound too bad.
“And what are you gonna do when he finally finds someone?” Rin knew no mercy. Makoto wasn’t even sure how he had figured things out just from irregular meetings at competitions around the world, but it was kind of nice to have someone to talk about this. Or, it would have been nice, if it was a nice person.
“What do you mean?”
Rin crossed his arms behind his head and his smile was… almost sympathetic. “It’s alright if you want to torture yourself like that, it’s actually admirable, but… what will you do when Haru one day brings home a girlfriend? Or a boyfriend?”
That was… In all those years, Makoto had never considered that. Haru was just… The thought had just never crossed his mind. But statistically speaking, Rin was probably right. “I’d be happy for him.”
Rin shook his head. “Of course you would be. Only you, Makoto, only you.”
Makoto pushed his hands into the pockets of his jeans. It was getting cold. “What are you trying to say?”
“That you’re a fool.” Rin really didn’t know mercy. Or tact. “And that you should tell him.”
“But…” Makoto had considered that. Briefly. But he really wasn’t sure how that could help. Sure, he didn’t like lying to Haru but he also didn’t want to make things weird. Weirder. After all, he’d been stupidly in love with his best friend for years. If Haru didn’t mind him behaving like a love-sick fool, than all was well, right?
“I don’t see how that would help.”
“Fool.” Rin shook his head, almost disappointedly. “You really are as pathetically clueless about these things as Haruka.”
“Clueless? About what?” Haru piped up from behind them.
Rin opened his mouth, and Makoto quickly jumped in before his friend could say anything stupid or true: “How was practice?”
Haru raised his eyebrow but then shrugged. “Hm.”
Rin just shook his head and muttered something underneath his breath that sounded like “Fools”. But he smiled. “Come on, let’s get to the restaurant, we’ve been waiting forever!”
Makoto and Haru fell into step half a meter behind him, Haru shuffling closer to Makoto’s side. “It’s getting cold,” he huffed indignantly. Grinning, Makoto wrapped his arm around his shoulder.
“I told you to bring your jacket.”
“Hrm...”
“It’s in the car.” Makoto said with a soft, entirely too fond smile and pointedly ignored Rin’s eye-rolling.
