Three times she said goodbye to him.
The first time was after a long and arduous fight, when she felt she couldn't be with a person whose opinion of women didn't match the love and respect she needed from him. He said horrible things, which – repeated to her friends – caused them to stage their own version of the Boston Tea Party with his things. He'd always said to her that even years later he still sometimes found some of his things washed up in a dark corner of an Amsterdam Canal.
She moved away four years after, single yet again, but a baby on her hands. Amsterdam wasn't for her anymore. She tried her luck with Berlin and met him while strolling along the Spree river near Friedrichstraße. It took him 30 seconds to ask where her husband was. It took her 2 months, 18 days, 23 hours and two glasses of wine to tell him that the father of her child had died in a car crash. It took them another 2 months to finally kiss again. He had to apologize for the fight first.
The second time was after his job promotion that would send him to New York for at least 2 years. His excited tone faded as he realised she wouldn't immediately pack her bags and go with him. The baby was a kindergartener just settling in and she was reluctant to leave this ambiguous city that she'd fallen in love with. She made him go, pushed him to go, and stayed behind, crying for days.
She followed him after three months.
After New York they lived in Boston, then London and back to Amsterdam where they started finding his things again. At least he claimed they were his and she played along. Their son just rolled his eyes.
The third time was in a hospital in Amsterdam. He was going home to feed the cat and do some things and would come back in the afternoon, like he always did. She told him to keep down the food supply or the cat would get fat. He replied that the cat was already fat anyway. And with that he left. When he returned he felt like he hadn't said goodbye properly. She would have disagreed with him.
