He didn't talk to Eret. Not immediately, anyway.
He grumbled at him, and murmured his discontent while forcefully cleaning axes and longswords; Gobber tended to ignore is quiet ramblings. He also slammed the new knife that Eret had ordered of him down in front of him a little harder than usual – which still wasn't particularly hard and Eret certainly didn't notice any change in force.
Astrid, however, did notice a certain continuous wetness to her cheeks as Hiccup kissed them whenever he thought he could get away with it – which was practically as soon as Astrid was inside a certain range around him. At first she didn't mind, of course, but by the end of the first day she was starting to get annoyed. By the middle of the second day she was thinking about accidentally on purpose dropping her axe on Hiccup's foot whenever he dared to come near her. By the end of the second day, Hiccup's foot was swollen so much that he had to cancel his night-time flight with Toothless and after a failed stomping-up-the-stairs Hiccup was faced with a brooding dragon, an angry girlfriend and a head-shaking mother. There was also the smallish problem of a young Hideous Zippleback occupying his bed. Not-really-stomping back downstairs Hiccup settled into the chair by the fire and covered with his furcoat – the Zippleback had his blanket – tried to get some sleep.
In his sleep his brain came up with the best rudery it had ever come up with. It did not have the required effect – the dream Eret laughed and the real Eret hadn't heard a word of it – and Hiccup woke up as unsatisfied and angry as he'd gone to sleep. He was colder now, so at least it seemed as if he hadn't suddenly died overnight.
He was just trying to appease Toothless with a lovely extra salmon on the side that he'd freshly caught especially for him, and which would perfectly compliment the breakfast of Haddock and Cod, when Astrid knocked and walked in.
„How are your feet?“ she asked, only slightly sorry – on the inside.
„They're fine, thank you for asking,“ said Hiccup, diving right back in to give Astrid another kiss on the cheek.
„Hiccup!“ She pulled her head away and ducked under his arms. She crossed the room to say hello to Toothless.
„What?“ said Hiccup, hobbling after her.
„What in the world is going on with you?“ she asked. Toothless adopted the same inquisitive look that was to be found on Astrid's face and together they stared at Hiccup. And stared.
And stared.
„Okay, fine, I'm jealous. I hate Eret, except I don't, not really, but UGH he's practically crawling all over you trying to get your liking and he's wooing you, Astrid. He's wooing you, right in front of me and – UGH!“ Again, the footbench had to suffer and again a tiny sick dragon jumped up scared. In this case the small Zippleback fell off the bed with a crash, causing a small explosion above. Hiccup ran upstairs to see if there was a fire that needed extinguishing, but the fireball seemed to have hit Toothless' sleeping stone.
He slowly trotted downstairs again. Both Astrid and Toothless stood rooted to the spot; Toothless had turned his head to the side as if he was seeing Hiccup for the first time.
And then Astrid started to laugh. „Oh, Hiccup, that's ridiculous. You don't have to be jealous. Besides he's not wooing me,“ she blushed as she said this. „He's just being friendly. He doesn't know anyone, and probably doesn't know how to make friends.“
„I...I...I...what? You know, I don't think I can agree. He's kissing your hand in that pretentious way and-“
Astrid waved him off, a slight anger in her voice. „And that's why you have to kiss me every five seconds just to show him that I'm YOUR girlfriend. Keep doing that and I'll keep dropping my axe on your feet.“ She stormed out of the house, muttering under her breath and shaking her head. Her axe swung warningly on her back.
Hiccup looked after her, more confused and frustrated than before. Neither his mother nor Astrid had really managed to make him feel better. Astrid less than Valka.
Perhaps his mother was right, perhaps he should talk to Eret. Alone.
