The door crashed open loudly, surprising Valka and the sickly baby Nadder she was taking care of. She saw Hiccup slam the door shut with both hands – and the following angry outburst.
„Aaaaa~aaaaargh!“ yelled Hiccup, twisting his arms in the air angrily and stomping his feet. He kicked over a small foot bench for good measure.
„Hiccup!“ He stopped and breathed hard.
„Hiccup?!“ He turned to face her, eyes cast down and shoulders sagged. He'd soon found out that Valka had a certain kind of sternness about her that would change him from a 20-year-old Chief to a small boy within seconds. He supposed that kind of reaction was only strengthened by the twenty year gap of motherly care.
„What is the matter?“ Valka simply stood there, arms hanging at her side. Nothing about her suggested anger, yet her voice penetrated his skin in a way that his father's never could. He stooped to pick up the foot bench.
„Nothing. It's... it's nothing. Everything's fine. Village is happy, Gobber is overworked and needs a new assistant. But everything's fine.“ He stormed up the stairs, knowing full well that that is not the way to escape his mother's questions, but if Toothless had followed him into the house through the roof, they could easily fly off again.
He hadn't.
Hiccup threw himself onto his bed and listened to his mother's careful footsteps.
„Anything I can help you with?“ she asked as she crept nearer. His left side warmed up as a small body was lowered onto his bed. The Nadder's spikes dug into his ribs, but it wasn't painful – yet. His mother crouched down next to his bed and swiped his hair from his forehead. Hiccup remembered his father doing that once or twice. That was before he'd considered his son to be too old to be treated thus, and only when he was so sick Stoick feared for his son's life. It was nice to think that Stoick had taken it up from Valka.
„It's stupid,“ mumbled Hiccup into his pillow.
„Is it about Eret liking Astrid?“
If possible, Hiccup would have liked to sink even deeper into his bed. „How'd'ju know 'bout tha'?“
„Everyone knows. It's obvious he likes her.“
Hiccup sighed and sat up, swinging his legs over the corner of the bed and resting them beside his mother with a clink. The Nadder grumbled quietly and moved her head towards his thigh. „Great. I don't just feel stupid, I also look stupid.“
„No, you don't.“
„Yes, I do. And.. and... he helped us and I'm the Chief and I can't just punch him; not that I could, he'd eat the ground with me, have you seen his arms? But I have to look diplomatic and wise, while I watch him kiss Astrid's hand right in front of me and I would just love to set Toothless on him. And I'm...“
„Jealous!“
„YES! AAAAARGH!“ He let himself fall backwards, his head almost hitting the hard edge of the bed. The Nadder grumbled again.
Valka took his hand in hers. „You are allowed to be jealous, you know? And you are allowed to show it.“
„Am I?“ said Hiccup to the ceiling.
„Just no violent outburst like the one just now. Not very diplomatic and wise.“
Slowly, Hiccup sat up again, looking down at his mother. His right hand came up to pet the baby Nadder, which gurgled happily with half-closed eyes.
„I like him. I actually do like him and... and he fits. Here. He's taking good care of Skullcrusher, such good care, if I kicked him out, Skullcrusher would probably go with him. But Astrid's my girlfriend, finally. Like, finally. And he knows that, and...“
„Then, talk to him.“ said Valka.
„Ugh!“ This time he really did hit his head as he fell backwards.
„Talk to him!“ She patted his hand and went downstairs. The baby Nadder dug its spikes deeper into Hiccup's stomach and fully closed its eyes.
