For some time he didn’t quite know what it was. He looked out of the window and lost himself in the dreary grey desert blocking his view of the park that lay beyond. He went to the supermarket to buy something and stood holding fruit he was allergic to, forgetting what he’d come in for. He spent more time shaking his head free than having coherent thoughts.
It took weeks for the solution to creep into his brain; a process only helped along by the few times that one of his employees at the company said or did something indescribably stupid and he wanted to look to the side to share an eye roll and knowing smile with Brad.
He had already appreciated Brad – hell, not just Brad; the Doc, Rudy and even Ray, but mostly Brad – when they were still shit-jumping in Iraq. Being back in normal life he suddenly realized how very similar normal life was to the insanity of Iraq and how much Brad had made it better.
He missed his sergeant.
He missed his friend.
The urge to look to his side for the eye roll grew smaller as he got more accustomed to his new and normal day job.
The urge to contact him did not.
He knew Brad was in Afghanistan with the Brits. He also knew that letters took an average of seven months to get there – if they got there at all.
He decided to write a Christmas card; in September.
Dear Brad,
Merry Christmas.
Yours, Nate
He thought long and hard about not writing lieutenant.
