„That movie was horrible.“

“It wasn’t that bad, Kurt,” laughed Blaine, nudging his boyfriend a little bit. “They did have a very sweet make-up scene at the end. That was cute.”

“Well, yes, obviously, should we ever break up, I want you to do exactly the same thing or I won’t get back together with you.”

“Duly noted.”

As Blaine moved to gently curl his fingers around Kurt’s, a tall guy bumped into him. “Fucking fags! Do you have to parade your perversities around?”

“Your outfit is a perversity,” snapped Kurt back. Blaine hushed him and tried to press him onwards, just to get as far away as possible.

The tall guy, however, was quicker and stepped in front of them. Blaine looked to the ground and tried to drag Kurt sideways.

“Hey, I remember you,” said the tall guy, leaning down a bit to get a better look at Blaine’s face. “You went to my school once.”

“No, I don’t think so,” said Blaine quickly, still attempting to sidestep the tall guy. He saw from the corner of his eyes how Kurt’s eyes widened and noticed the way Kurt’s body stiffened at this newly acquired knowledge.

“Yes, you did. And I remember having told you before that you’re sick. The message doesn’t seem to have sunk in. Steve, Brian!” he called out to somewhere behind them and both Kurt and Blaine turned around in time to see two equally tall and thuggish guys approach with a nasty grin on their faces.

“Oh god,” moaned Blaine.

The tall guy was bearing down on Blaine now. Kurt tried to step in between, but was pushed to the side with one hard shove. He couldn’t keep his balance and fell to the floor.

“You keep out of it, drag queen.”

“Leave him alone,” growled Blaine and stepped in front of Kurt.

“Or what? You defending your little cocksucker?” The tall guy shoved hard at Blaine who stumbled backwards. Blaine didn’t have the time to answer before a fist landed on his jar and he groaned in pain.
He could hear feet shuffling nearby and a loud squeal from Kurt and a panic rose in him. “No, leave him alone.”

The tall guy grabbed him by the front of his jacket and pulled him close. “Don’t worry,” he said menacingly. “He’s just going to watch.”

~~~~~~~
“Blaine? Blaine?” Kurt knelt beside him, his eyes flitting all over Blaine’s body as well as up to two figures luring over them, talking rapidly into phones. “Oh god, Blaine. I’m so sorry.”
Kurt took off his scarf and placed it over Blaine’s bleeding face. He felt the material of the scarf, felt the fibers scratching at his raw skin. He tried to sit up, but it was more the screaming pain coursing through his body than Kurt’s hand that kept him on the ground.
“Kurt?” he whispered before everything grew dim.
~~~~~~~~

“Dad? Dad? Oh god, dad!”

The harsh light surrounding him made Blaine blink furiously. Hands were moving all over him, adjusting things, pulling aside his jacket and shirt, gliding along his skin, feeling for more injuries. He could hear bleeping and the deep rumbling of an exhausted car engine.

Kurt was coughing next to him, choking on his own tears. “Dad, Blaine, he…we-“

“Give it the phone to me, kid!” demanded a gentle voice. Kurt answered with more sobs, but he must have handed the phone over, because the next thing Blaine could hear was a professional explanation of their situation. He felt like throwing up. Rough hands guided his head to the side and the buttery popcorn from earlier found its way back out. Kurt was there in a flash, nearly knocking the paramedic over as he lost balance from the shaky driving.

“Blaine? Talk to me! Please.”

Kurt’s face was tear-stained and blotchy. He didn’t look harmed and Blaine breathed a sigh of relief. “Kurt,” he croaked out, clinging to the hand he was offered.

“I’m sorry, I’m so sorry. I should have kept my mouth shut. Oh god, I don’t know what to do. Do you need anything? I should call your father. Are you in pain? Did you give him something for the pain?” Kurt looked around at the paramedics with a frantic look in his eyes. Blaine squeezed his hand to get his attention back.

“I’m fine.”

Kurt shook his head and more tears fell from his eyes. “No, you’re not. You’re really not. You-“
The ambulance stopped and Kurt rushed out of the way so that the paramedics could get Blaine out, but he was back at his side as they rolled into E.R.

It was light and voices and chaos, and Blaine was being pushed into a green room smelling of disinfectant. He heard a woman telling Kurt that he had to wait outside, but his own protest was drowned out by Kurt’s angry voice. Again, hands were swarming all over him and he felt utterly uncomfortable. He closed his eyes and tried to concentrate on Kurt’s distant voice.

Someone shook him, asking him to open his eyes and he felt like crying. Why couldn’t they let him be somewhere else?

It felt like ages before they rolled him out of the E.R. and up to x-ray. Kurt had time to call out to him but again wasn’t allowed to come with him and Blaine just wanted to go home with him. Go home and crawl up in bed with Kurt – forget about the entire day.

“Can I go home?” he whispered and the nurse smiled at him sadly as his eyes shifted all over the place.
“We have to make sure you’re okay. We have to call your parents, do you have their number?”

“They’re out of town, can I…my boyf… Kurt’s father, he’s coming, I mean, can you call him or maybe Kurt called him…my..my parents aren’t here.”

“Okay.” The nurse placed a hand on his arm as they entered the x-ray room. This time Blaine was allowed to keep his eyes closed. His mind wandered back to the movie theater, back to him and Kurt in their seats, Kurt’s legs draped over his. He wished they could have just gone home, kissed goodnight, maybe made out in the car before he had to drive back to Westerville. He wished it wouldn’t always be him.

He screwed up his eyes as tears slowly fought their way out and rolled down the side of his face and into his hair. The x-ray machine was making strange noises and he had to fight the urge to open his eyes and come back to reality.

He wanted Kurt at his side.

He wanted Kurt’s father there to tell him things would be okay.

He wanted to scream out to the world, what was wrong with it and why did he learn boxing when it was no use to him when it mattered?

He wanted to tell Kurt that courage was the last thing on his mind at the moment and that he was sorry he had failed him.

In the same moment he realized that Kurt would do anything in his world to make sure Blaine wouldn’t think like that.

He opened his eyes and stared at the ugly grey ceiling.
