At first it had bothered her incredibly. Three months in he had suddenly started to put his hands on the back of her neck. When they were sitting in front of the TV, when they were going for a walk, when they went shopping together, when they stood in front of her parents together for the first time. Sometimes she’d shaken him off by going to do something in particular and sometimes she’d tried to ignore it and hoped he’d take his hand away again.
Finally, she’d confronted him. He only meant to protect her. That’s what he’d said. He’d meant no harm. She told him that it made her feel weak, as if she desperately needed his guidance and protection. It made her feel like she couldn’t hold her own. She told him she needed to feel like she could.
He’d been unusually quiet for a few days afterwards. He also hadn’t touched her neck again.
On their sixth months anniversary he brought her flowers and chocolate. They had dinner, they watched a movie, they cleaned the kitchen.
When they kissed, ready to go towards bed, he put his hands around her neck.
“Do you need protection now?”
