"Yeah?" Janna answered the phone absentmindedly. She had barely even glanced at the caller ID, having jumped the phone immediately when it had rung, desperate for someone to talk to.

"Hey," Steph greeted her, a lot more cheerful than Janna felt. "Guess who just stopped by the Florist just as I was closing up."

"Janson?" Janna guessed half-heartedly while she opened the fridge in hopes of finding something to eat. Maybe she still had a frozen pizza she could eat tonight. She really wasn't in the mood to cook on a lazy horrible Friday like that, Besides, Steph always called to share the latest Wes Janson story.

"Janson always stops by, that's nothing new." Janna could just picture Steph rolling her eyes. "Let me help you. He was tall and dark-haired and handsome. Sound like someone you know?"

"You know I only ever talk to guys who are dark-haired and handsome," Janna pointed out while rummaging through the disappointingly empty fridge. "That's kind of my type, remember?"

"How could I forget? Whenever I see one of those, I immediately think of you for a reason. It’s like it’s been burned into my brain permanently."

"So what about this one made you feel compelled to call me right away?" Janna closed the fridge again. There was nothing eatable in there. She would have to order in and go grocery shopping tomorrow. That's what she got for deciding to spend Friday evening in. She still couldn't believe she had had such a stupid idea. “Even if you do think of me whenever a dark-haired hot guy comes into the store, you don’t call me because of everyone?

"Well, usually, I wouldn't but I think you know this guy."
"Who is it? I can't think of a single guy I've dated that your description doesn't work for." This was getting annoying really fast. As much as she liked to talk about men, this didn’t seem to be going anywhere. “If it was Kev, then I really don’t need to know about that.”

"I don't know him by name. He came in here and asked for flowers for a date he was going to go on with a college girl and then he described that girl and asked me to pick flowers. You know how men are about not wanting to make a decision in case that what they pick is the wrong option."

Janna sat down on the couch. She had the impression that this would take a while.

"And the description immediately made you think of me? Because every guy with dark hair who's going on a date in Arkham has to be going on a date with me? Besides, you of all people should know that I never get flowers."

Steph on the other hand brought every girl she went out with flowers. It was almost enough for Janna to consider trying to date a florist.

"Well, there are admittedly quite a few who do go out with you," Steph sighed. "Anyway, that didn't really get me thinking about you yet. It's more the fact that he then showed me a piece of paper with your address written down on it in your handwriting and asked me for directions."

"What?"

Suddenly, she was sitting up straight and no longer picking at the her split ends.

She didn’t have a date tonight. She would know if she did. She was really good at knowing what she did every day and if she had agreed to go out on a date with someone instead of studying psychology on a Friday night, she certainly would remember about that.

"I thought you didn't know. You know, because you were over here earlier whining about how you didn't want to stay home on a Friday studying all by yourself."

"But who was it? What do you remember about him aside from him being dark and handsome?" This was going to end in a complete and utter nightmare. She could already see it.

“I don’t really remember. I only started paying attention to him after he showed me your address.”

"I really don't remember making plans for tonight. I was just gonna sit around in my PJ pants and study psychology. You know that. It's not like I didn't try to find something else to do," Janna sighed.

"Well you need to get out of those PJ pants right away and get into something more or less nice because that dark and handsome guy was carrying a bottle of wine with him along with those flowers he got here. He seems to be serious about this."

"I can't imagine someone who's going out on a date with me would buy me flowers," Janna said getting up and into her bedroom. She opened her closet to start looking for something to wear. As bad as Steph was in helping to identify her date, at least she was good about reminding her to look more or less acceptable. “And mostly, when they bring something to drink with me it’s hard liquor so I’ll get drunk and they can take advantage of me.”

"Yeah, that's why it took me a little longer to make the connection," Steph teased. "Really though, he was pretty cute. How can you not remember him?"

"Who says I can't remember him? My only problem is that all guys I ever go out or even flirt with look the same. That makes it pretty damn hard to find out who you're talking about from description only."

Janna pulled out a green dress that looked like she hadn't worn it in a while. Long-sleeved and reaching down to her knees, it would look good enough with black wool tights without leaving her all exposed to freeze to death. She still didn’t regret her decision to give up skin-colored tights forever -- or at least until she entered the job world.

"Found what you want to wear?" Steph asked as if reading her mind.

"Yeah. Green dress. I think you bought it for me for my birthday? I'm gonna put you on speaker phone while I get dressed. Try to think of something else so I can find out who our guy is."

"Your guy."

"Whatever. Come on, help me out here." She slipped out of Jack’s sweater easily, letting it fall to the floor. Since her room looked a little messier than usual, she made a mental note to not take this too far tonight or if she ended up doing so, at least not turning on the lights.

"I think I might have done enough already. I bet you were lounging around in Jack’s clothes and would have opened the door dressed like that if it wasn’t for me."

Sometimes, Janna resented the fact that Steph knew her so well.

"Stephanie Norris, you help me figure out who this is this very minute or I won't tell you how the rest of the evening went once this is all over. You wouldn’t want to miss the whole story on yet another dark and handsome guys, would you?"

Steph was quiet for a second but Janna knew she had said the right thing. Steph was incredibly curious and nosy and wanted to be up to date on everyone else's dating life, especially when hers wasn't that eventful as was the case right now.

Janna was sure that this was why back in high school Steph had gotten so involved in her romantic life, herself not having anything but a fake boyfriend to keep busy with. It explained why Steph had been the only one not oblivious to the whole triangle thing.

"Okay, he wore this pretty awesome grey coat, about knee-length, very elegant and a scarf. It was all very tasteful. I quite like the look."

"I love guys who wear scarves. Whoever that is, I made a good pick there. Shouldn't he be here already?"

"He probably got lost. I deliberately sent him the wrong way when I recognized your address because I knew that otherwise you'd have no time to get ready."

"Steph, you're perfect," Janna laughed, pulling up the zipper on the side of the dress. She then started to comb her hair. Bird's nests were not generally something men went for. No time for anything else.

"Yeah, I know. I figured you'd do the same for me."

"It would be very worrisome if whoever you went on dates with needed to stop by my future places of work first," Janna laughed.

Whatever Steph said next was hard to make out over the sound of the doorbell.

"Oh my God, he's here," Janna almost shrieked.

"And we still don't know who it is."

"I'll have to go for the surprise then. Or not open the door."

"Surprises are better than Friday nights alone at home. Remember how you've been whining about it all day now?"

"True. I'll call you later and tell you everything."

Janna looked into the mirror one last time before hurrying to the door. She was a little nervous, mostly because of the unusual circumstances surrounding this mysterious date of hers. She didn't even know what they had agreed to do. She hoped it wasn't something that required a special attire and would give away that she had completely forgotten. There was no doubt in her mind that she would pretend that she knew perfectly that he would be coming. Anything else would just be stupid

She opened the door to find exactly what Steph had described: A handsome, tall and dark-haired man in a grey coat. And he was pretty cute on top of that.

Relief washed over her as she recognized him and suddenly, everything began to fall into place. So she really had forgotten!

"Oh, hi, Burkhardt! Come in!"

She had been complaining about not wanting to study psychology to just about anyone who would listen and apparently she had just forgotten that of all the people who had been forced to listen, one very handsome specimen had agreed to study with her over dinner.

"Are you ready for the most prepared study partner in the world?" He asked, handing her a small bouquet of yellow roses. She would have to thank Steph for her great taste in flowers later but also question her about the color. Steph had told her about the code when it came to roses often enough and according to her, yellow symbolized desire. Which Janna was pretty sure was not something Burkhardt felt for her.

“You really didn't have to buy me flowers," she said, almost blushing. "I'm the one who should be giving you something. You're the one who agreed to come over and help me with this mess."

"You agreed to buy dinner, remember?" He winked while taking off his coat and shoes.

Really, she didn't but that was the least she could do.

She had never looked into a TA manual before but she was sure that he was breaking a rule here. She had never heard of TAs agreeing to study dated with students before which was why she hadn't remembered this date. She had thought he was kidding when he had suggested to come over. The only reason she had still given him her address and phone number was so he’d remember her and agree to go on a date with her out of pity when she ended up not passing psychology which she was sure was going to happen.

"That doesn't really count. Those flowers are beautiful." She led him into the living room where her psychology things were still strewn around on the coffee table.

"The girl at the flower shop helped me. I'm really bad at guessing what it is girls like," he smiled and Janna felt herself return the gesture. She loved honest guys.

"I also brought a bottle of wine," he continued, pulling a bottle out of his bag. "I hope you like cheap white wine. It's the only I still had at home."

"It's my favorite," Janna grinned. "Mind putting it in the fridge while I try to find a vase for those flowers of yours?"

"No problem."

"I see you've been studying," Burkhardt said as they sat down on the couches. They were set up in a ninety degree angle allowing at least partial contact with the table which was always good when studying in groups or a small dinner without setting the table.

"More like highlighting stuff in hopes that what I highlight will go straight into my head." She watched as he started to leaf through her notes, starting to grow a little bit embarrassed when he stopped to laugh at small doodles and written conversations she and Vincent had had all over her notes. She knew he had brought his own stuff from the look of his bag. She had already spotted a psychology book in there and she doubted
that anyone, not even psychology teachers, let alone TAs, carried those around with them for fun.

"Well, that's a start."

"I hope we get some studying done before my roommates get home. It's always hard to study on Friday nights, especially if they come home drunk." There really was no need to mention that usually, she was the one who distracted everyone who was trying to concentrate when she came home late on weekends.

"It was either studying with you or trying to clean the apartment. My parents are coming over next week and I really hate cleaning.”

"Enough that you’d want to study with me?” Janna grinned. “That's why I have very cleanly roommates. They really do most of the cleaning if I do most of their laundry and figure out whose socks belong to whom."

"That sounds like an arrangement I could live with," Burkhardt laughed. "So you're what, three people?"

"My brother just moved out and a friend who goes to school with me moved in." She bit her tongue before adding "He used to date the girl from the flower shop”, not only because that wasn't exactly true but also because there was no need to mention that she knew exactly where Burkhardt had been. "And the other roommate who's been here a lot longer is my best friend. It's really comfortable and a lot easier to deal with than strangers I would have had to deal had I opted to move into the dorms."

"And you have a lot more room than at the dorms. I don’t even live at the dorms anymore and I still hate my roommates. Then again, I major in psychology. There’s the chance one of them will be interesting enough for research.”

"You could always come over here to conduct your psychological experiments. We’re pretty open to that as long as you bring wine."

"Anyway, how's the studying going?" Burkhardt asked after a few seconds that followed Janna’s suggestion.

"Really bad. I'm one of those people who keep postponing it. I'm a really good procrastinator."

"So you've told me. I usually find that studying with someone else helps to counteract that."

"Which is why you're offering yourself up to help me with this, making you hands down the best study date and TA ever?"

"I come with ulterior motives, actually."

"What, you ran out of money for dinner because you had to buy me flowers?"

Oh, Wes Janson! ...Sorry, mein kleiner sinnloser Fangirlmoment am Rande. ;)

Aber ich bin komisch, was offene Enden angeht, also...^^
