Rating: PG
Author’s notes: This is hopefully the beginning of the chronicles of Peter and Jared’s relationship through the years. And go and check out “Franklin and Bash”. It’s a fun show ^^.
Disclaimer: The moment unicorns are real, I make money with this. The title is from the Mary Poppins movie.

We better keep an eye on this one

---

He meets Jared Franklin for the very first time on the playground of his Junior High School during lunch break on the first day after summer.  The sun is still mercilessly beating down on the burnt grass, and his pants are uncomfortably sticking to his legs. He wishes he could get rid of them without risking detention again. He kind of learned his lesson in elementary school -- repeatedly. He never got what all the fuzz was about as long as he was still wearing his underpants -- and he always did, he checked beforehand.

Anyway, he’d never admit it, but Junior High kind of scares him. His parents got divorced in the summer which resulted in a move, and now he knows no one. He must look exemplary lost, because the next thing he knows he’s hit by a wrapped sandwich on the head. He whips around and is ready to risk detention or a black eye for punching his assailant -- depending on the other’s height. As it turns out, he doesn’t risk anything because the kid is tiny. And Peter does many things -- playing the guitar, ignoring his parent’s fights over money, climbing trees too high -- , but he doesn’t hit preschoolers, not even annoyingly smirking ones.

“You look lost,” the small kid says.

“And you look tiny.”

The kid rolls his eyes and huffs. “Really? Like I haven’t heard that one a million times before.”

He stares at the wrapped sandwich he caught in his right hand and then back at the kid. “What is this about? Some kind of secret greeting for this neighborhood?”

“Nah, dumbass,” the small kid replies and Peter thinks his mom would’ve scolded him for such language. “It’s lunch and you didn’t bring anything to eat. Figured you must been hungry.”

“Huh,” is all he can manage to say, because that kid is right -- he is hungry. His mom had to leave for an early shift, his older brother had still been asleep, and half of their stuff is still in the moving boxes. Among other things his clock and his lunch box, which means he had been barely in time for the school bus this morning and had forgotten to pack something to eat.

“A simple thank you would be enough,” the kid interrupts his train of thoughts.

“I don’t even know your name.”

“You only thank people you know by name?” The kid looks at him like he is the freak going around throwing sandwiches at other people. “Wow … must be some weird neighborhood you’re from.”

“Shut up,” he growls but can’t hide the accompanying smile. “Is this chicken?” he asks and waves with the sandwich.

“Of course. Really, how have you survived so far?” he asks with an amused grin and leads the way to a bench under one of the few trees on the playground. “Name’s Jared, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you, Jared. I’m Peter,” he says and reaches out as if to shake his hand.

“Seriously? Is Mary Poppins your nanny or what?” Jared asks with a snort, but still shakes his hand. Peter has no idea who that Poppins woman is, but decides he doesn’t care for the moment and devours the chicken sandwich instead.

The next day his brother George has to get up with him, and apparently he’s some kind of wizard or so, because he finds his lunch box in the mess that’s their living room in under five seconds and makes him a chicken sandwich.

He proudly shows Jared his packed lunch box before school starts, and for a second Jared looks somewhat disappointed, but he smiles again when Peter sits down next to him in Algebra II.  They spend most of the class creating inappropriate drawings out of mathematical signs and doodling them into their workbooks. They snicker hidden behind their math books, but after twenty minutes the teacher is fed up with them, and so Peter gets his first detention in Junior High -- and he’s still in his pants.

His mom will be pissed, but he thinks it’s totally worth it because she has absolutely no idea of the faces Jared can make while they’re not allowed to speak during detention. It’s hilarious. He practically gets no homework done between Jared’s faces and looking out the window at the tree they sat under the day before.

Peter Bash doesn’t know it yet, but that’s the place he met his best friend.

Wenn du mich also ganz doll lieb hast ...)
