Singing rain
She could hear it singing to her, calling her. She just couldn’t resist. Spike had turned his back to her, and she opened the door and disappeared into the night.
Oh, and it was wonderful! It was here, everywhere around her, touching her skin, soaking her white dress, caressing her hair. The spirits of the water surrounded her and whispered to her.
“Spike doesn’t want to play with me”, she told them while she was wandering down the alley. Her hands were moving through the air, trying to snatch one of the spirits swirling around her. “He’s busy. He wants to kill the slayer…for me.” She smiled widely, but then her expression changed. She looked sad. “He doesn’t wanna dance. Leaves princess all alone.”
The spirits were singing in her head now, trying to take care of her, make her feel better. “He says, I can’t go outside. I’m still weak. But I want to see the stars…and the raindrops! Aren’t they wonderful?” She traced one of the raindrops down her arm, then picked it up and let it drip onto her tongue. “But taste like nothing”, she said disappointed.
A stray cat was sitting in an entrance, watching her with yellow eyes. “Come here, kitty”, Drusilla said. “Won’t you come out and dance with me?”
The cat followed its instincts and fled.
“Poor princess…all on her own”, she whined. But then, another feeling was filling her head, she moaned and leaned over, steadying herself with her hand at the wall. “Such loneliness…such fear…right over there…”
She followed her vision until she arrived at a playground, deserted in the rain. But there was a girl sitting on a swing, with blond dripping hair, totally lost.
Drusilla stepped closer. “You poor thing”, she said pitiful. “Did your mommy forget you?”
“She’s coming”, the girl answered. “I just have to wait.”
“Maybe she left you. Maybe she’s not coming back”, Drusilla whispered.
“She has to!”, the girl shouted. “She would never leave me!”
“Oh, she would…” Drusillas gaze became distant, like she was looking through the rain right into her own past. “He ripped her head off. Her blood was all over the kitchen floor…was still warm when I was coming home.” She giggled. “Sweet Angel, always trying to impress…”
The girl stared at her with widened eyes in fear. “Who are you?”
“Don’t be afraid…I’m gonna take care of you.” She stepped closer and the girl tried to run away, but the vampire caught her like a naughty pet, holding her tight. “Shhh…”, she made as the girl tried to scream. “Silent, little one, all silent now…” Her lips touched the sweet little neck. “…Forever.”
“I don’t think so”, a voice said from behind. Drusilla sailed around.
There she was, a girl with blond hair – the slayer. Drusilla had never met her before, but the stake in her hand left no doubt.
She hit her, and Drusilla had to release the girl to protect her face. She stumbled backwards, too weak to fight back. A whine escaped her throat as the slayer made the attempt to assault again. But before the stake pierced her heart, someone attacked the slayer from behind with a growling sound.
“Dru, RUN!”
And she did, but then she turned around just to see Spike fighting with the slayer, who striked with the stake again and again. “No!”, she wailed, “don’t you hurt him!” She grabbed her from behind, trying to make her stop. This gave Spike enough time to get back on his feet. He pulled her off the slayer, and then they ran, through the rain that was still falling. Spike was clutching her wrist so tight, it was almost painful, but she didn’t mind.
Finally they reached the warehouse, both wet to the bones. Water was dripping from clothes and hair.
“What were you thinking?! You could have been killed!”, Spike yelled. He took his coat off and threw it on a chair. “What am I saying, you never think at all. - I told you not to go out!”
“I’m sorry”, she whined. “But the rain…”
“Forget the bloody rain!”
She bended over the table, whimpering and wailing. Spike sighed. “Alright, don’t you cry, pet, everything’s gonna be okay…” He embraced her from behind, kissing her neck. “I was just scared, love. Don’t ever do that again.”
“Won’t”, she said whiningly. “Spike…I’m cold.” She shivered.
“Let’s get some new clothes for the princess”, he said.
“I’m your princess, right?”
“Right, love.” He turned her around and kissed her on the dripping wet hair.
