Surprise
A hand hit the old table with a loud crash. „I said I wanted the slayer’s head on a tray!”, Spike shouted. The demon in front of him sagged a bit deeper into his seat. “And what do you bring me?! NOTHING!”
“The slayer – she is strong”, the demon stuttered. “She has friends who fight with her.”
“Of course she’s strong, she’s the fucking slayer! You reckon it wouldn’t be a tea party.” The vampire stepped closer. “I’m only wondering: Can you take her down?”
He nodded frantically.
“He’s been a bad man”, someone said in a sing-sang voice. Spike turned his head to see Drusilla standing in the door, wearing her dark red dress.
“Dru! Where have you been, love?”
“Nowhere”, she said. She stepped closer and rested her head against his shoulder. “Poor Spike. He disappointed you.”
“I’m obviously surrounded by idiots”, he grumbled.
She looked at him, suddenly grinning. “Are you gonna kill him?”
“Don’t think so. Demon-boy here gets a second chance. If I kill everyone who’s a cack-handed moron, there’ll be no one left.” He turned around and stared at the demon. “I want the slayer, and I want her dead. If she isn’t, you’ll soon be.”
“Yes, of course, I will do everything…” He stood up in a hurry.
“And now OUT!”
Drusilla ran her hand across his cheek. “You could slit open his artery and fill his blood in a mug…and then eat his eyes.” She looked like a child who is waiting for her Christmas presents. “Can I have one then?”
Spike kissed her forehead. “You can have them all, pet. Just for you.”
She giggled and made a small dance across the room. “That will be fun!”
“So…” He seated himself in one of the chairs and watched her. “What was it like in nowhere?”
She continued to dance. “Oh the stars are beautiful there…they are all blinking and smiling and whispering to me…”
He sat up, suddenly interested. “What did they say?”
“The Slayer’s after us…” She stopped dancing and a whining sound escaped her throat. “She wants to destroy us…kill us…”
“Come here, love. She won’t succeed.” She settled on his lap and whispered in his ear: “Kill her…kill her for me, Spike? I wanna have her eyes…Such beautiful eyes…”
“You will have them. Soon…” They were sharing a passionate kiss.
“I met someone”, she suddenly said.
“Whom?”, he asked.
“No-no, won’t tell”, she said in her singsang voice and placed a finger on her mouth.
“Was it Angel?” He sounded alarmed.
She leaned forward. “Nooo…”
“Good”, he said, relieved. “I don’t like it when you go outside all on your own. It’s dangerous. You gotta be careful.”
“Am”, she reassured him.
“What did you do, you and this mysterious no one?”
She lifted herself up and smiled down at him. “Nothing. Nothing, nothing, nothing…”, she continued to sing until she finally disappeared in her room.
Spike looked after her. Something was off. He couldn’t put a finger on it, but something was…different.
Establishing herself on the bed, she smiled. He had forgotten. He didn’t know what this was about. But she hadn’t forgotten, oh no. How could she? The first time her lips had touched his skin…
She laughed to herself happily. She would surprise him. This was going to be wonderful!
Her fingers stroked the wooden casket beside her. There it was, inside. She could smell it. She could feel it. Whispering to her, singing to her. Oh, it was beautiful...
“Spike?”, she called. He appeared almost immediately in the door frame. “What is it, pet?”
She grinned. “I’ve got something for you.”
“You do?” He looked surprised. She was almost bursting with expectation.
Moving over, she showed him the casket. “Open up!”, she urged him. “Look at it!”
Slowly he unsnapped it and swung open the upper shell. “Oh pet!”, he called out. “This is…amazing!”
“Isn’t it, isn’t it?”, she giggled. “Touch it! It’s still warm. She was so beautiful, and she didn’t even scream – caught her by surprise”, she told proudly.
“No one can be more beautiful than you are”, he said and kept looking at the content of the tiny little casket. Inside, there was a reddish gleaming heart.
“Happy death day”, she whispered in his ear.
“Better” is apparently a question of perspective.
