“Magnus, you don’t have to do this,” Alec said softly and stepped next to him. Magnus had just finished the pentagramm and looked at his art piece.

“What other choice do we have, Alec? Tell me another option and I’ll gladly step away from this.” Magnus really could do without summoning his father. He hated family reunions, especially with his dad.

“We’ll find something,” Alec said and took Magnus’ hand, trying to pull him away. Magnus smiled sadly at him. He knew that this was the only option and as much as Alec wanted to convince him, deep in his heart he wanted Magnus to go. He wanted Magnus to save Jace because he wouldn’t be able to live without him. He would be able to live without Magnus though and the warlock was acutely aware of that.

Jace was more important to Alec than he was. He always would be.

“I love you, Magnus.” Alec seemed desperate, torn even.

“I know that, Alec. Doesn’t change the fact that I need to do this.”

“Please, don’t,” Alec said.

Magnus cupped Alec’s cheek. “You love Jace. This is the only way to save him. I’m not powerful enough. My father is. He can help.”

“And what will happen to you?” Alec’s voice was so quiet now. He didn’t want to hear what the price would be. Then he could pretend that everything would be ok in the end. Both Jace and Magnus would be ok.

“I’m gonna be fine, Alec,” Magnus said, said what Alec needed to hear right now. “I’m gonna be ok.”

Alec still didn’t let go of his hand. “Can you stay just a little bit longer? Just - just tonight?”

They didn’t have the time for that but Magnus didn’t have the strength to refuse Alec like that. And if he was honest, he didn’t want to. He wanted to stay with Alec. He didn’t want to go at all. Didn’t want to face his father. But he would. Because he loved Alec and he would do anything in his power to save his brother.

Alec pulled him a little away from the pentagramm. “Come with me? Just for a little while?”

Magnus let Alec lead him away, out of the room and into the bedroom. He let Alec pull him onto the bed and let him pull Magnus into a tight embrace.

Magnus let out a little shaky breath. He tried to stay strong for Alec but he felt anything but. Maybe just for a little while he could show how scared he was.

Alec held him closer. “I wanted to thank you,” he whispered. “You always help me, no matter what. I know you’re not doing this for Jace. I know you’re doing it for me and I appreciate it. I love you so much, Magnus. And I couldn’t bare to lose you.”

“You won’t lose me. My father won’t harm me.”

“I know. I know you’ll come back to me but I also know how hard this is for you. To face him again after all this time.”

Magnus let out a little laugh. “That’s an understatement. I’m dreading this reunion.”

Alec held him tightly and kissed the top of Magnus’ head. “You’re the best person I’ve ever met. And the bravest one, too. I’m so lucky to have met you. And I’ll always be with you, no matter where you are. I’ll always be in your heart.”

Magnus closed his eyes and enjoyed having Alec so close. “Yeah, you are.”

“So take me with you. Just remember I’ll be with you. I’ll have your back when you face Asmodeus.”

“That means a lot to me, Alec. Even if you can’t be there with me in person.”

“I’ll be with you in your heart,” Alec said and kissed Magnus softly.
