You don’t meet anyone in this fucking job.

Without Words

You don’t meet anyone in this fucking job.

That’s the problem, Lilah tells herself as she’s touching up her red lipstick in the bathroom. Not that it won’t be smudged to hell very shortly, but she has an image to uphold. Also it can’t hurt to make him squirm a little longer.

It’s hard to hold on to her self respect while she’s standing in her personal enemy’s bathroom, but by now she has practice. Really, she tells herself as she opens her compact powder, it isn’t anything that warrants much thought.

She works a high-demanding, sometimes dangerous job, so she needs to blow off a little steam every now and then. Her clients are mostly of the non-human or off-putting variety (sometimes both), and she doesn’t have time to go fishing outside of work. Her coworker, as much as he may drive her up the wall and occasionally stab her in the back, is reasonably handsome and somewhat skilled in the bedroom. 1 plus 1 equals two. What else is there to say?

People say that in these kinds of situations, the woman always looses. She thinks that the kind of bullshit people say until women believe them. Why should it matter who’s fucking whom in that bed? They’re still both here with a person they despise.

Luckily talking is optional in the bedroom. They both know that if they started, they’d be at each other’s throats before anything interesting happened. That’s why she doesn’t remark on his smirk as she steps out of the bathroom, just like he doesn’t say anything about the time she took inside. Those are the rules of the game, and they’re both very competitive players.

Besides, she knows him so well that he doesn’t need to say anything at all to get his point across. His lifted eyebrow says: Do you really need these kind of power game beforehand every time? Her smile says: Are you that eager waiting for me?

A pointed look at her mouth communicates: Did you make yourself extra pretty for me? Her pursed lips answer: Please, in your dreams. A look across his suit tells him: Clearly you didn’t bother.

It’s like mindreading. It should scare her that she doesn’t know when it started, when she could first take a look at his face across the room and know exactly what he thought of a client before she’d even heard a single word. It’s a pity they spend so much of their time tearing each other down. If they would work together more, the things they could do…

But it’s not that kind of story, and they’re not working at that kind of firm. So this is where she puts that skill to use, to know where to touch, where to kiss, how to move, to drive him crazy. And if she uses this time, looking into those concerningly blue eyes, pretending not to hate him, she doesn’t have to tell him.

He probably knows anyway.
