Sprache: EnglischWhen Nathan woke up again, Audrey was gone. Duke was still there, though. He still didn’t understand what he was doing here. But it was kind of nice. He also smelled fresh flowers. He turned his head and saw a vase right next to his bed.
“Audrey brought them before she had to leave. The police station is short a detective. They can use every help they can get.”
“Was my father here?” Nathan asked, although he already knew the answer.
“Not yet and if he does, I’m outta here, Nate. Nothing against you.”
“Nothing against me?” Nathan asked and sat up a little. “I thought you had a lot against me.”
Duke raised an eyebrow. “Aren’t you mixing stuff up here? I think it’s you who has something against me. With all the arrests for the most ridiculous crimes.”
“I’m just doing my job, Duke.”
Duke scoffed. “Please, don’t start,” he said. “Let’s not talk about this. You need to rest.”
“I’m fine,” Nathan said and sat up even more.
“Careful, Nate. You just had surgery. I know you can’t feel it but you can still pull some stitches if you’re not careful. Just take it easy for a while, ok?”
“Haven needs me.”
“Haven can spare you for a few days. It still has Audrey. Me. We can deal without you for a while.”
“The Chief won’t be thrilled about that.”
“Well, I’m sure he wants you to get better first. He’s still your father. He cares for you.”
“Why isn’t he here then?” Nathan asked quietly. It was stupid really. He knew his father. He knew he wasn’t the soft type. He still cared, though. Just not enough to visit him right after he had surgery. He would come, that was certain, but he’d finish his work day first. That was more important.
“Because you are both emotionally useless,” Duke said. “No offence.”
Nathan laughed softly. “None taken.” Then he looked at Duke. “Did you really bring me a sandwich, too?”
Duke nodded. “I did.”
“Even if you were meeting Audrey for lunch?”
“You both sit in the same office. And I know you forget to eat. And you’d want something if we sat there, eating and talking.”
“That’s really sweet. Can I have it now?”
Duke shook his head. “I’m afraid you can’t have any solid food for a few days. Downside of having your appendix removed.”
Nathan groaned. “That’s not fair.”
“I already called Tracy to bring over some soup for you.”
Nathan smiled softly. “You did?”
“Hospital food is disgusting. And you’ll need your strength to get better.”
“Thank you,” Nathan said softly and took Duke’s hand. He hated that he couldn’t feel him. He really hated it sometimes.
“Is it ok if I stay here? I know you’re not my biggest fan.”
“Stay please,” Nathan said. It was nice having him here. He could even forget that they weren’t friends anymore. It just felt like it used to.
“Then I’m staying. Until you throw me out or until your father comes over. Not going anywhere.”
Nathan smiled softly. “Thank you, Duke.”
