Nathan smiled as he saw that Duke was calling him. “Hey,” he answered the phone with a big smile on his lips.

“Hey, Nate, I’m afraid I have to cancel for tonight.” Duke sounded stressed.

Nathan tried to ignore the disappointment. “Yeah, no, that’s fine. Is everything ok?”

“Jean is sick. I can’t leave her with a babysitter like this.”

"Understandable. Send her my love, would you?”

“Will do. I’ll make it up to you, Nate. See you.” With that Duke had already ended the call. Nathan sighed. Duke seemed stressed, worried also, which was no surprise. Jean was his everything.

Still, it was hard to leave after work and go home. He had looked forward to their date. And not even only the date, just to see Duke. He missed him. He had been so busy lately that he had barely any chance to see him. Also, he was worried about Duke. Duke would not stop for a minute while he was taking care of Jean, Nathan knew that.

So after he had parked in front of his little yellow house, he immediately started the engine again. He made a stop at the grocery store first, and then drove over to the marina.

He knocked at the hatch, standing there nervously, not sure if he was really welcome at the moment. He had been dating Duke for a few weeks now but he wasn’t really part of this family. This was a family matter which Nathan might not be a part of yet. Still, he wanted to help.

A few moments later Duke opened the hatch. He looked a little surprised. “Nate?”

“I brought fresh ingredients for a chicken broth,” Nathan said and held up the bag he was holding. “Also tea. I thought Jean could use that.”

Duke smiled softly and stepped aside so Nathan could enter. So maybe he wasn’t completely wrong. Nathan was relieved. “I thought - I thought I could make the soup. Then you can take care of Jean. How is she?”

“She’s sleeping at the moment. She has a high fever but it’s getting better.”

“I’m relieved to hear that. I don’t like the thought of her being sick. Can’t really picture it to be honest.” Jean was always full of energy.

“She’ll be thrilled that you’re here though. She loves you. You know that.”

“Well, I like her, too. So I’m making this soup now. Is that ok?”

Duke’s smile only grew. “Of course. My kitchen is yours.”

Nathan got to work and an hour later the soup was boiling on the stove. He put the heat down and then went to look for Duke. He wasn’t in the lounge so he sneaked down to get to Jean’s room. The door was open. She was still sleeping and Duke was sitting in the bean bag next to her bed. Nathan leaned against the doorframe and just watched them. He really hoped he could be part of this family one day. There was so much love in this room.

“Nathan,” Jean’s voice rang to his ear. It was weak and small. “You came to visit.”

Duke turned around. He hadn’t noticed that Nathan was standing there.

“Of course,” Nathan said softly and stepped into the room. “You came every day when I was in hospital. It was the least I could do.”

“Will you stay for a while?”

Nathan nodded. “I made soup for you. And your dad. You both must be hungry.”

Jean nodded slowly. “I’m hungry.”

“Me too,” Duke admitted quietly.

Nathan smiled. “I’ll bring you down a plate.”

“Can we eat upstairs?” Jean asked. “On the couch? We can all cuddle like that.”

Duke seemed like he wanted to protest but he agreed in the end. “Let’s get upstairs then.”

“I’ll get the soup ready.” Nathan went back to the kitchen and prepared three bowls full of soup. He brought them over to the lounge where Jean was already being wrapped up in blankets by her father.

“We could watch a movie.”

“You pick something and I get us something to drink,” Nathan said. A few minutes later he returned with glasses full of water and then sat down next to Jean so that she was sandwiched between Duke and Nathan.

As always Jean had chosen Moana and as they were watching, they were eating their soup. Ten minutes after they had finished their soup, Jean was already sleeping again, leaned against Duke. Duke wrapped an arm around her and then turned to Nathan. “Thank you for coming,” he whispered quietly.

“You’re welcome. I’m glad I could help a little.”

“You did. The soup was really good. And I’m sure it will help her get better.”

“She’ll be better in no time,” Nathan said and slid a little closer to her. “So should we keep watching the movie?”

Duke nodded. “Almost like a date, right?”

Nathan smiled softly. “Almost. But somehow better.”
