Jim pushed Bones’ hand away when the beeping sound got too loud and annoying but Bones just pushed the scanner back into his face.
“Some day you really need to stop getting yourself in danger,” he grumbled as he was reading the results of his scan.
Jim tried again to push Bones away. “I’m fine. Can you get this out of my face, please?”
“You’re not fine!” Bones protested and moved the scanner over his body.
At least the beeping sound wasn’t so close to his ears anymore. This sound really was annoying. And it didn’t help his huge headache which he wouldn’t mention to Bones, otherwise he would get a whole lecture about how not fine he was.
If Jim was honest, he wasn’t fine. He was tired. Exhausted. And he was hungry and thirsty. He could use a proper meal and a good night's sleep. Then he’d probably be fine again.
“You’re coming to medbay when we’re back on board.”
Jim groaned. “That’s really not necessary, Bones. I’m fine.”
“How about you let the doctor decide that?”
“And what is the doctor’s verdict?” Jim asked as Bones put the scanner back into his pocket.
“That you need to get to medbay.”
Jim rolled his eyes when he heard Scotty’s voice over the comms, telling them that he would beam them right to medbay. All traitors in his crew.
He was beamed directly on a bed and he hated it. “Come on, Bones, I’m ok.”
“You’re dehydrated, Jim.”
“So I’ll drink some water.”
“Can you just stay put and let me take care of you?”
Jim lay down - though he didn’t really want to - but he knew it was important to Bones. So he let Bones ram some medicine in his neck and closed his eyes. He listened to the beeping of his vitals. “How long was I gone?” he asked quietly after a while. He already felt better. The meds had to work.
“Three days,” Bones answered.
Jim opened his eyes and watched him. He was professional, still fully concentrated on Jim’s condition and how to help him.
“I’m sorry for worrying you.”
Bones scoffed. “As if I’d worry about you, Jim.”
Jim raised an eyebrow. “Not even a little?” he teased.
“Not even a little. I have other patients too, you know.”
Jim nodded but stretched out his hand. He was glad when Bones stepped closer and took it. “I promise I’ll try not to get kidnapped on my next mission.”
“How about you just stay on board of this damn ship and let some other people risk their lives?”
“I’m the captain, Bones.”
“One more reason to let other people go down to planets. You’re needed here. We all need you.”
Jim understood and squeezed Bones’ hand. “I know. I’ll be more careful next time. I promise.”
Bones smiled a little. “Thank you. Now sleep. You need it.”
Jim nodded and closed his eyes. He hadn’t even realized how exhausted he really was until he fell asleep just a moment later.
