Meine Geschichte Parentage, diesmal auf Vilis Sicht

As annoying and stressful as it was for Odin to order him to the capital for just one night to pick up his nephew and now heir, at least it meant less time around Odin, less time where he had to struggle not to punch his brother in the face, Allfather or not. Bad enough that Odin had surprised both him and Loki with the decision of making Loki his ward and heir, or that he still had not taken steps against the prejudices against using magic, even though he himself used magic, that he rules through magic. But he still refused to lift the geas that prevented them from speaking about Loki being at least part-Jotun. Worse, he’d allowed the horror stories about Jotun to persist, to the point Loki took them as fact.

“All we’ve heard about frost giants is that they’re monsters. Dangerous and mindless and...”

“Enough!”, he interrupted, unable to bear listening to Loki speaking that way about his family, about himself, even if he didn’t know. “They would teach you these lies? Even though...” Odin’s geas kicked in, preventing him from continuing, choking him. He closed his mouth, relieved to feel the magic relent. He exhaled sharply to calm his temper, then started to consider how to correct Loki without setting off the geas. Then it occurred to him. “I would greatly appreciate it if did not talk about my mother that way. Or use the expression ‘frost giant’ for them.”

“Vili!” Freya exclaimed.

“Odin may not like to talk about our mother, about our heritage, but this is not something he has forbidden!” Just speaking about Loki’s biological parents. “I do not mind talking about it. And my nephews should learn about their grandmother.” That way, if Loki even found out, they could hopefully at least mitigate the damage somewhat.

Freya stared at him, then smiled slowly as she understood. “True. They should learn about their grandmother.”

So that’s what he did until they reached him home, he told stories about his mother, and about Jotunheim and its people, stressing that they were just that, people, not monsters.

“What were you thinking, allowing Loki to grow up with such prejudices?” he demanded of Freya that evening after Loki had retired for the night. “How will he react if he ever learns...?”

“Odin’s geas...”

“...just prevents people from telling him, from speaking of it. There are other ways he might learn of it. What if he encounters a magic user or artefact that return him to his natural form?”

Freya looked stricken, like that had not even occurred to her.

He sighed. There was no changing the past, but he could take steps to teach Loki, to prepare him. “I’m already planning to ask Vörnir to train Loki in how to fight.” Vörnir was half Jotun as well. “I’m also still in contact with other part-Jotuns. I will take Loki to meet them, perhaps even some full Jotun. To see for himself that they’re not monsters. Will you teach Thor?”

“I will.”

Fortunately Vörnir did agree and arrived soon at his home. “Odin’s youngest, huh?” he said.

Vili nodded.

“Why me?”

“You’re a better warrior than me, a better teacher for it. I know how to defend myself, but I would have no idea how to even begin teaching him.” Vili paused, trying to puzzle out how to let Vörnir know without setting off the geas. “They welcomed him shortly after the war against Jotunheim.”

Vörnir frowned at him, confused by the seeming non sequitur, but then his eyes widened. “He’s...” he cut off, choked by the magic attached to the geas.

“Don’t try,” he warned. “Odin set the geas using the Odinsforce.”

Vörnir frowned thunderously.

“I’m planning to introduce him to Imr, perhaps Skaði. Do you have any other you can think of who might be good for Loki’s education?”

Vörnir smirked. “I might be able to think of some.”
