It was the heat that he noticed first. That made it real.

It was already real. He had felt it. In his body. He had heard stories about how it was like losing a limb if you lost one of your pack. The pain he was feeling now was unbearable. It was like he lost his heart. It had been ripped out of his body.

It wasn’t just one member of his pack. It was his entire pack. All of them. At least almost.

Laura still had her arm around him. He wasn’t sure if she needed the support or if she wanted to stop him from running into the burning building.

Derek wanted to. He wanted to run into their house and get everyone out of there, even if he knew it was already too late. No one would have survived this inferno.

“Let’s go.” It was barely above a whisper and it didn’t sound like Laura really wanted to follow her own order.

“What?” Derek looked up to her. Her face was wet from the tears she had shed.

“We need to leave.”

“What if someone’s still alive in there?”

“Derek!” Laura was harsher now. “Who do you think did that?”

Derek looked back to the house, looked at the flames that were dancing toward the sky.

“Hunters! And what do we do if we encounter them?”

Derek didn’t even have to think. It had been beaten into him. Run and hide.

“Run and hide!” She repeated the words in his head.

Derek turned back toward her, looked back at her, at her red eyes. She was the alpha now and Derek would follow her.

“Come on,” she said softer again. Her hand moved until it found his hand. She squeezed it softly and started to run.

Derek followed her, ran away with her. Away from their home. Away from the flames. Away from the heat.
