He had turned off the ignition, but they not yet got out of the car. It was silly, really. Sebastian had been over for dinner before, though only as a friend then. This would be the first dinner Dave had him over as his boyfriend. It was the first time Sebastian was meeting anyone’s family as boyfriend.
Dave was so quiet. Was he second-guessing inviting him? Second-guessing dating him? Sebastian had been pleasantly surprised by the friendship they had built, a connection deeper than he was used to. And he had no idea how they had stumbled into dating. He had never dated before, so he also had no point of reference.
“This is the first time I’ve brought anyone for dinner,” Dave said suddenly.
“Not even Santanna when you were dating?” Or rather, been each other’s beard. Not that his parents had known then.
“No. I knew it was just a temporary front.”
Sebastian tried to push aside the rush of pleasure at the implication that this between them was not temporary. “Because you were going to come out?”
Dave’s lips twitched. “No. Because we would be going in different directions after school and not invested enough in the front to keep up the pretence.”
Sebastian reached over and took his hand at the reminder that it had not been Dave’s choice to come out, that it had been traumatic to the point that he had tried to kill himself.
Dave squeezed back and smiled at him. “But this is better.”
“Good. You deserve it.”
“We both do.” Dave leaned over the console and kissed him briefly. “And we deserve dinner. So let’s go inside.”
“Let’s go.”
