The moment Rin noticed he knew they were doomed.

The way Yuliya and Niko interacted. The way she didn’t flinch when he accidentally touched her hand. The lingering looks. The quiet trust.
There they were, the next generation. Following in the footsteps of him and Diego. Doomed from the start without knowing it.

They were working on Rin’s car together, preparing it for the next race. For Yuliya. He still wasn’t sure if giving it to her had been the right thing to do or the biggest mistake of his life.

He could see it in their eyes. The trust, the fire. Her energy bringing out the best of him, and his silence calming her down when she needed it. Just like him and Diego, the same, the exact same.
Did Niko have a photo of Yuliya too? A black and white polaroid, shot from the side, a cigarette between her lips, full of happiness in a summer’s night? Drunk shenanigans, an intense kiss, and someone overstepping a line ever-so-slightly? A gun in her hand, the threat to cut her enemy’s wires? Was he in on it? Was he opposed to it?

Right there and then, Rin knew that the race would be fatal.

The cycle was repeating. Almost a new family tradition, in some sort of fucked up way. Two people in love, full of hope that they could fix each other. Make each other better. But things weren’t what they seemed like, they never were, never would be.

Yuliya knew her goal. Her ambition. Her reason for the things she would be doing, sooner or later.
Niko knew to downplay it. To not take it as seriously as he should. Love and being blind to things like this came hand in hand.
And Rin knew exactly how this story would end.

Everybody always thought of themselves as breaking the cycle, doing everything different. But ultimately, they never did. It was always the same. Someone tried to save someone else. Someone got left behind. Sometimes, someone died because of it.
Tradition, right?
