“You’ve driven my GT-R before, haven’t you?”
Yuliya jumped and turned around, startled. Rin was leaning in the door frame, hair disheveled, bags under his eyes.
“Yeah, why?”
“Take it. Drive your race.” He looked down. “Go make your own mistakes. I can’t hinder you anyway.”
She had never seen him like this before. Physically and mentally, he usually was the all-around tight-knit reserved brain of the group and had been forever - no emotions clouding his sharp mind. That’s why he was the boss.
“What happened to you?”, she couldn’t help but ask.
He stared at her for a moment, obviously considering his answer.
“I’m trying to not make the same mistake twice”, he then said. “I can’t save everyone. If you want revenge, get it. Get your peace of mind, but you’ll have to live with the consequences.”
Yuliya’s eyes narrowed, but her anger, her rage, had faded. This was weird. Rin was weird, and he wouldn’t be weird if he didn’t have a reason for it.
She made her way over to the bar and pulled out two chairs. “Sit”, she commanded, and Rin followed the request. “You’re cryptic. You obviously have something to say, so say it directly.”
Rin took a deep breath.
“I know the look in your eyes”, he started, “I’ve seen it before, once, more than a decade ago. I tried to intervene. A driver died.”
He fell silent for a moment, but Yuliya kept quiet.
“I’m falling into the same pattern as I did back then. Trying to keep my friend out of a situation they are desperate to be in. Trying to keep them from driving and from killing someone. Last time I failed, so this time I upped the stakes, and I’m sorry for that, truly.”
Yuliya didn’t even take half a second to connect the dots. “You burned my car”, she stated, more fact than question, and Rin nodded.
“You have a vendetta against Bell. He… my friend… had a vendetta against the other driver, too. I didn’t let him drive that day and he sabotaged the car anyway.”
“And you thought burning my car would do… what exactly?”
There it was, the anger. How could he?
Rin shrugged, defeated. “I hoped it would show you the danger of it all. To keep you from killing yourself or some other driver out of revenge. I saw no other way. Yuliya, I’m sorry. That’s why I’m offering mine.”
As quick as the anger came, it was gone again. Cars were holy and everyone had their own, no exceptions. One didn’t share or loan their car. Unwritten rules of street racing. One also didn’t burn their teammate’s car down, but that was a different thought.
“Look.” Rin turned to her, eyes glistening. “I lost a loved one back then and I fear I’m losing a friend now, too. But I’m never going to get it right. I let you drive, you might push Bell against a wall. I don’t let you drive, you find a way for a secret 1v1 and get her anyway. I remove your car from the equation, you might shoot her point blank.”
Yuliya wanted to intercept, but he didn’t let her.
“Point is: You have to do your own thing. And I know you will, no matter what I do. You’re your own person with your own opinion and your own autonomy. I can tell you that Bell didn’t do it a million times and you’d still believe she did. We all have to make our own mistakes, and some of them will be fatal. I just hope you can handle the consequences.”
He sighed.
“I hope I can, too.”
