“He’s going to die today.”
Not a question, a statement. Wires’ gaze was still glued to the screen in front of them, but their eyes were already burning from the oncoming tears.
“He’s killing himself”, they repeated.
Rin stayed silent.
“Say something!” Wires turned towards their crew leader, desperate. “Just… anything! He’s dying! Fuck’s sake, Rin, what the fuck is going on?”
“I don’t know”, he answered quietly, not returning their stare.
“That out there,” Wires tapped against the screen, “is so unlike Diego. That is not him.”
They fought back the tears again.
“Something is really, really wrong.”
Rin’s face was stone cold. “There’s nothing we can do”, he said, and it took everything inside of Wires to not punch him right there and then.
Their voice was shaking and eerily quiet. “That out there is my friend, Rin.” They pointed at the screen again. “Something is wrong with my friend, and because of you we have no way to contact him. To get him out of there.”
“Don’t blame this on me.”
Wires had never seen Rin so emotionless.
“If he’d wanted us to contact him, he would have made sure we could. He’s been driving for fifteen years, he’s no amateur.”
The cars on the screen took a corner and started speeding towards the city’s largest bridge. A couple more turns and the race would be over. Maybe…
Oh no.
Maybe Diego was just eager to win, they wanted to think. Maybe he would be fine after all. But in that exact moment his RX-7 began to break out.
Right on top of the bridge.
Both Wires and Rin stared in disbelief as the car flipped, and again, and again, dangerously close to the railing. Another flip, then it stayed upside down and slid for a few more meters, closer and closer to the railing.
Wires held their breath. Diego could have survived this, he could be okay, maybe hurt, but still there, he could -
The momentum was enough.
Tears shot into Wires’ eyes as they watched, had to watch, as the red car burst through the railing and fell, fell, fell into the never ending darkness.
