Oh well.
Struggling back to his feet and out of the rubble that used to be a load-bearing wall, Cam wipes away the blood on his lips with the back of his hand and grins defiantly up at the Prior. He'd only been punched halfway through an office building, so he sees no reason to offer any kind of deference to the supervillain. Before he can say something unbearably cool (or at least somewhat witty), though, a dark figure shoots down between them and wraps itself around Cam, while gunfire erupts all around them.
It's over in less than a minute.
Black, feathered wings open around Cam and are folded neatly behind the back of a man. His dark hair is ruffled, black spandex hugs lean muscle and a domino mask hides his eyes. His smile, however, is blinding. "You alright, buddy?"
Cam blinks once, twice, to get his bearings. Behind the man, he can't see the Prior any more, but a team of three supes crowding around a dark shape on the ground, that likely is the villain.
Damn.
"I had everything under control."
"Sure you did!" The man (Mutant? Angel?) laughs. "But we were in the area anyway and thought we might lend a hand."
The man's hair is floppy and looks unreasonably soft. Cam thinks he might have been hit in the head one too many times.
"Well... thanks, I guess."
"Aww, don't take it personally, there's four of us and just one of you. Thought regulations said to work in teams?"
Cam busies himself with brushing dust off his jacket to avoid having to look at the lopsided smile or the domino mask. "Yeah, well, my team is sort of... under construction." Which is less than his actual teammates deserve, who are upstanding, highly motivated heroes who through no fault of their own happen to not be the SG-1 Cam had hoped for.
"So you go and attack a Prior all by yourself? That's suicidal!" The mask hiding the man's eyes makes it difficult to tell, but Cam is sure he hears something somewhere between amusement and approval behind the disapproving words. As it stands, Cam can't help but grin at his knight in not-so-shining spandex armour. "Well, getting my ass whipped is sort of my superpower."
That startles a very charming laugh from the man.
"Oh, I'm not joking, that's literally what I do: I'm the punching bag with the witty one-liners."
The man tilts his head slightly in an odd fashion that makes Cam think he's rising his eyebrow behind the mask. "Well, I was tempted to offer you a position on our team, but... sorry, that job's already taken. Beaten and bloody is a really good look on me."
Cam doesn't say that he suspects everything might be a good look on the stranger, because he's pushing thirty and a respectable superhero in the process of re-assembling a legendary team. "You get that and wings? Greedy."
"Kinda." There's the weird head-tilt again, but the accompanying smile is blinding. "I could give you a lift?"
"Not gonna say no to that, that's freaking cool, but buy me dinner first? Or, at least, let's exchange names?" The dinner line earns Cam another chuckle, which pushes him to extend a hand towards the man. "Shaft."
"Jumper. But you can call me John."
"Oh, if that's how it is... Cameron. Cam."
"Camshaft? Seriously?"
Cam rolls his eyes. "As I said: My strength is getting my ass kicked, not creativity. And can you actually fly or do you just jump?"
"At a certain point, there's no difference, I don't think."
"I used to be a fighter pilot, so, I beg to differ, Skippy."
The white eyes of the domino mask narrow slightly. "You're quite mouthy for a guy who agreed to be carried up dozens of feet into the air." There's a hint of a warning in the voice, but the reckless mixture of amusement and approval is undeniable this time. Cam laughs in utter delight.
"And that's exactly how I found out about my superpower."
