Back at the Refuge. It had been quite a while since Illium had last been here, too many things going on in New York. Raphael was building the city into a capital worthy of an archangel. His Tower was undergoing changes to keep up with the changing times. Illium was very interested in human progress. And he advocated for using new technologies in the Tower as well for the comfort of the angels and vampires living and working there as well as the security of Raphael’s territory. The recent upgrade of the water system allowed them to have running hot water in every apartment and better toilets for the offices. And now that the works on the Tower were finished, Illium got a break and he really needed it. He needed to see his best friend. It hurt his heart to think about Aodhan who had withdrawn from the world. Illium understood he needed to give him time. Even if Aodhan’s body had fully healed from the damage these bastards had done to him, his mind was deeply scarred. Illium didn’t fully know what had happened to his friend, but the extent of those mental scars indicated pure horrors. He couldn’t bear to be touched, except by Illium’s equally scarred mother. It was good that the two found comfort with each other! Maybe it helped both of them come to terms with things that had happened.
So the first thing Illium did after arriving at the Refuge was looking for the two angels who meant the world to him. His heart clenched but he had to make sure they were as okay as they could be given their circumstances. He was so glad Raphael had kept Aodhan in the circle of his Seven which was proof that Illium was not the only one who firmly believed his best friend could come back, that he still had worth!
He landed in front of Aodhan’s atelier and knocked on the door the same way he had for all his life. When he opened the door, he found Aodhan painting again. He was alone today.
“Hey Aodhan.” He said and sat down in a corner to watch his best friend. Aodhan graced him with a blink before he returned to his painting. Did it hurt to be treated like this? Yes. But Illium had to be strong for this man. He knew Aodhan would talk to him, laugh with him - if only he could. If his mind would allow it.
“Do you want to know what happened since I last could be here?” Illium asked. The slight movements of Aodhan’s muscles told him he was open for it. So Illium told him about the works on the Tower. The way the city brightened up at night as electricity became more and more common. “You would like the city. You have to come see it one day.” Illium said and instantly noted that this was too much. That’s why he added: “When you’re ready. I’ll wait for you. I’ll be here for you.” That was a given. Aodhan had shared his whole life. His earliest memories were those of the sparkling angel across the room. No matter what happened, he would never give up on his best friend. A life without Aodhan was not something Illium could ever imagine. When Illium tried to change the topic Aodhan held out his hand to stop him. So Illium stayed silent. He had ruined the mood. At lest he was still tolerated here. Aodhan kept on painting and Illium watched him.
It hurt so much. Illium thought back to the good times. Aodhan had always been quiet. But Illium had never had to push him much to join him in all the mischief he had thought of until… a hundred years ago. He barely dared to admit it but “I miss you, you know?” he whispered. He didn’t know how much time had passed. “I miss you at my side. I know you need more time. You have that time. I won’t push you. But fuck do I miss you…”
A shadow appeared in front of him. A sparkling shadow. Illium looked up until Aodhan sat down next to him only a few inches separating their wings. He still didn’t speak. But it seemed like a little progress. Aodhan cared about him as well. It was still a long way until they would fly together again and do stupid things. But this… this sitting together gave him hope that one day it would happen again. He smiled at Aodhan and noticed the other angel’s features relax a little. Yes, this was a good sign.
