“What were you thinking?! She’s much too old for you!”
Too young
“What were you thinking?!” his mother yells as she’s pacing over his kitchen tiles.
“Mamá.”
“She’s much too old for you! You should be going out with girls your age, not...”
“Mamá, escúchame”, he tries again, but he might as well be speaking to a wall.
“And she’s my partner.” She turns to him and he’s suddenly glad there’s a kitchen island between them. “Did you know that when you asked her out?!”
There’s a moment of silence. Then he says: “Yes.”
She throws her hands up in the air and starts pacing again. “What were you thinking?!”
“I was thinking that she’s an attractive woman and I wanted to get to know her better!”, and now he’s yelling, too.
“You’re too young!”
He clasps his hands together tighter on the top of the kitchen island. “I’m 28! I’m not a child.”
“You should be out there having fun.”
“I had fun”, he says, a choice of words he immediately regrets.
She holds up a finger to his face. “I don’t want to hear anything about that.” She shakes her head and mumbles something that sounds suspiciously like “robbing the cradle”.
“Then stop putting your nose into my business.”
That shocks her so much that she stops her pacing and just stares at him for a moment. “You’re my son.”
“I’m an adult.” This time it’s him who holds up a finger when she attempts to interrupt him. “No, you’re listening to me now. We’re both consenting adults, doing what adults do. Maybe it works out. Maybe it doesn’t. Either way, I’ll live. You don’t need to protect me.”
He leans his forearms onto the cool surface of the counter. “Listen, I understand that I put you into an awkward position. I didn’t mean to do that. But could you maybe, just maybe, just be happy for me for a moment?”
Her face falls. She remains quiet for so long that he’s starting to get worried. Then she grabs one of the high chairs and sits down opposite him. “I am happy you’re happy”, she says tentatively. “I just wish it was with someone different.”
He shakes his head. “You work with her. You know her. So what, is she a bad person?”
“No.” She follows up reluctantly: “She’s a great detective, and one of the best people I know.”
“So what’s the problem?”
She reaches out and puts one hand onto his forearm, right over one of his tattoos. “I just don’t want you to get hurt, mijo.”
“I won’t”, he says firmly. “Besides”, he amends with a smile, “maybe I’ll break her heart.”
She fixes him a serious look. “Don’t you dare.”

Ah, das ist wundervoll, alles was ich mir erhofft hatte, als du die "Mutter Partnerin"-Konstellation erklärt hast. Ich mag wie sie “I am happy you’re happy” zugesteht. Und das Ende erst. <3
