This was not going to be a good day. Aodhan knew that when he opened his eyes in the pale light of early morning. The outside had been grey for almost a week now and life was too busy for even a little joyflight above the clouds to get a few rays of sunshine. It wasn’t dangerous, yet, he could stay inside for about a month before his sensitivity to lack of light became physically apparent. But the twilight gnawed on his nerves and his mood. He sat up and allowed himself to look at the angel next to him for a few seconds. Illium was fast asleep and looked peaceful. Even Smoke had found her way to their quarters and napped next to her angel. She shortly lifted her head to locate the reason for the disquiet in the room, but when she noticed it was just Aodhan she curled up even tighter and slept on. Aodhan smiled and got up. Taking a sunbath on the balcony was useless so he got dressed and looked for work. There was still enough to do even though New York had almost recovered from Lijuan’s attack.

He was busy all day but everything in him screamed to get a bit of sunlight. It was almost evening when he caught a glimpse of blue and silver from the corner of his eyes. Not much later Illium landed next to him. “You okay?”

“Yeah. I’m fine. Just busy.” Aodhan didn’t want his lover to worry about him.

“I’ve heard you’re a bit moody. And you’ve been painting through almost the whole night. You only do that when you feel stressed.”

“I’m fine,” Aodhan repeated.

“Of course, Adi. Look at me and repeat it.”

Aodhan looked at Illium. But he didn’t manage to get the words out. The art of lying had always escaped to be mastered by him.

“I see. Come on. The city will not fall without you taking care of it for a few minutes.”

Aodhan considered Illium’s words. And then he nodded. The two of them took off from the building Aodhan had been working on and rose high into the air. They quickly passed the cloud layer and there was light! Sun! Aodhan instantly felt his mood lift as his wings absorbed the light and sparkled anew.

“Yes! That’s the Adi I want to see. All sparkling and bright!” Illium grinned and came close enough to him to tab his shoulder. “You’re it!” he called and away he was. Aodhan was dumbfounded for a few seconds but then he grinned and started to chase after Illium. It wasn’t easy to catch the best flyer in the angelic world but Aodhan knew him inside out and so stood a chance.

That went on for a short while, when a black lightning joined in. Illium laughed when he recognized Jason. Playing with three people was even more fun than just with two. Not too much later Mahiya who had been watching for a while decided to join them as well and somehow the news of a few angels having fun above the clouds spread in the city. In the end many came to watch and a few joined in. Even Raphael decided to have a bit of fun and join in.

After two hours, the light of day had already gone, the two angels who had started the game dropped out and distanced themselves from the group of players and lazily flew above the clouds over the sea.

“Are you feeling better?” Illium asked and let his wing brush against Aodhan’s

“Yes. Thank you.”

“You were too deep inside your own head again, right?”

“I guess. Thanks for pulling me out!”

“You’re welcome. Can you keep your evening free?”

“I will do it. Just for you!”

“Nice! Prepare to lose a few clothes.”

“I don’t want to lose just a few!”

They laughed and continued their flight. Aodhan was so glad about Illium’s presence in his life. The only one who could read his moods and ease them!
