He can feel the headache coming on like a wave. It’s too loud, too bright, too many people.
Too Much
It’s too much.
He can feel the bass vibrating in his body as he pushes through the crowd. Multi-coloured light is cutting through the darkness and shining in his eyes, making him squint. He can feel the headache coming on like a wave. It’s too loud, too bright, too many people.
He knocks into someone’s shoulder and almost spills their beer; he can’t hear what they’re yelling after him, but he can feel them, their annoyance.
He can feel everyone.
Usually, it’s not so bad. Parties are where people go to have fun, and feeling people have fun can be its own kind of high. He doesn’t know what’s different today, maybe he’s had too little sleep to block the bad vibes out or maybe the party actually isn’t going that well. He just knows that the couple in that corner is arguing, that the girl brushing past him is running to the bathroom to cry, and that the argument between those two male specialists with too much to drink will probably end in a fist fight.
The cold air almost knocks the breath out of his lungs as he stumbles through the open door. He didn’t bring a jacket, but he keeps up his pace until he’s rounded the corner and the noise of the party fades away behind him.
Finally, quiet.
He leans against the stone wall and looks up into the night sky, trying to find his centre again. Trying to calm his breath, trying to lock out the last of the intruding emotions like he’s been taught. His fingers massage at his temples to quell the throbbing pain in his skull.
“Hey, are you alright?”
It probably speaks to his current state of mind that he didn’t even notice her. Even now it takes a moment until his eyes hone in on her, drawn by the glowing tip of her cigarette as she brings it to her mouth. Then he can make out blond, short-cropped hair and the black jacket of a specialist. She looks vaguely familiar, but his brain can’t produce a name for that face.
“Are you okay?” she repeats.
“Just needed some air”, he says. Even now that he knows she’s there, he can’t really feel her. Either she’s very calm or his abilities just got overloaded.
She shakes her head and grins. “Yeah, it’s a lot today, isn’t it?”
“Yeah”, he breathes out. He slides down the wall until he can squat down, fingers moving to his neck to try to get rid of some of the tension.
“Can I get anyone for you?”
He begins to shake his head, but then decides that’s a bad idea. “No, I just need a moment. Too many people.”
Her eyes light up in understanding. “You’re a mind fairy.”
He smiles wryly. “The gift that keeps on giving.”
“Shit, and here I am bothering you. I’m almost done.” She holds up the cigarette between her fingers that’s burnt down to almost a stub.
“Not, it’s okay. As long as you don’t start crying or something.”
Another one of those grins twisting her mouth. “Nah, I’m good.”
She is calm, he realizes as he watches her take some more slow drags of that cigarette. It feels nice after all that drama.
Still, the headache won’t let up despite his attempts to the contrary, and he realizes that this is probably the end of the night for him. He gets up carefully and says: “I think I’m gonna go back.”
“Did somebody drive you?” she asks as she stubs out her cigarette with one of her boots.
“Yeah, but I’m gonna walk.” The last thing he wants is to go back inside to try to find Nick just to hear him bitching all the way back. Even though it’s gotten pretty cold.
“Let me walk with you”, she says suddenly.
He looks back at her in surprise.
“It’s just, with the attacks in the last weeks, you probably shouldn’t be out there by yourself. So let me walk with you.”
“I don’t wanna ruin the party for you.”
She shrugs. “I’m over it anyway, trust me. I probably wouldn’t have stayed much longer.”
He takes a closer look at her, sees the hilts of two throw knives protruding from her belt. Thinks about the last fairies who ventured out into the woods on their own. “Yeah, thank you.”
She smiles, more broadly this time. “You’ll be safe and sound with me.”
And he believes her.
