Not in Love
“I’m not in love”, Paul states at the beginning of the semester.
“She’s just a roommate.”
“I barely know her.”
“I barely see her.”
“She stacks books on the washing machine.”
“And mugs on the counter.”
“She has so many mugs. Why would anyone have so many mugs?”
“She get’s really upset with me when I use one of her mugs.”
“She drinks a lot of tea.”
“Like, a lot of tea.”
“And it’s really strange tea.”
“The whole apartment smells like tea. And what doesn’t smell like tea smells like her weird shampoo bars.”
“And there are dark hairs everywhere. Like, more than usual.”
“What do you mean that’s my hair, I know what my hair looks like!”
“Hers is more… curly.”
“I mean it’s nice. She has nice hair.”
“Not that I look at her hair a lot. Or her.”
“I mean, she’s barely there.”
“And if she’s there, she’s in her room. I think she reads a lot.”
“Actually, I think the stack on the washing machine changes every week.”
“How does anybody read so fast?”
“And she’s got really good grades. You think I’m a nerd? You should look at her essays.”
“Not that I look at her essays.”
“She left them on the kitchen table!”
“Her essay for Feminist Literature was pretty good actually.”
“It’s good that she’s smart. If she drops out this semester, I have to find another roommate.”
“That would suck.”
“Roommate castings are the worst.”
“Seriously, you should’ve been there. She was the only sane choice.”
“Even though everything smells like herbal tea and she’s weirdly territorial over her mugs.”
“Alright, maybe I’m a little bit in love with her.”
