Contrary to popular belief, James Lester was not heartless. He tried his best and he worked hard on cultivating this reputation, but sometimes, late at night, when the A.R.C. had been in lockdown for hours already with no end in sight and creatures still prowling its hallways, he felt not only for the team locked in there but also for the security personnel monitoring the screens and giving all the support that “We’re working on it” could give six people stuck inside a glorified storage closet.

“Get some tea”, he told the security guard and took his place in front of the screen. When he turned up the audio feed, Connor said “So, we’re not… we’re not gonna sleep tonight, are we?” and James rolled his eyes. Priorities, Mr. Temple.

Becker seemed to feel the same and huffed. “We might as well.”

“If you can sleep while standing up, oh, wait, don’t tell me, you actually can, can’t you? Special forces training?”

Emily sighed. “Shut up, Connor.” Her body was pressed up to the other man’s, apparently in an attempt to give Jess some space. James couldn’t be sure with the black and white image, but Jess seemed paler than usual. Abby had her arms wrapped around her and James thought she might have been running her hands up and down Jess’s arms as if trying to calm her down. Matt was behind the two of them, pressed against the wall. Now, he shuffled to the side and leant into Becker to be able to reach out and grasp Connor’s shoulder.

“They are working on it. Lester will get us out of here.” He didn’t add the Somehow but James could hear it in his voice even over the static noise.

Connor scoffed. “Lester is at home, fast asleep if he’s smart.”

James thought that maybe Connor was right and maybe he wasn’t being particularly smart right now.

“Oh, Connor, shut up” Becker snarled.

“Make me, soldier boy.”

James should be at home, asleep, not watching on a pixelated monitor how his head of security grabbed their resident genius’s face in both of his hands as if to break his neck, cleanly and swiftly. And maybe James would have preferred watching Connor Temple die a quick, painless death rather than watch Becker snog the man.

Abby wolf-whistled. The static of the audio feed made it ring in James’ ears. Emily groaned. “Seriously, boys? In here?”

“If it works it…” Matt trailed off, still watching the two men under his command make out. Because that was what was happening there. Connor had in fact shut up, instead opting to twist awkwardly to sling one arm around Becker’s neck, returning the kiss enthusiastically. In front of his fiancé. James should not be witnessing this.

“Oh, it seems to be working alright” Abby said. “I’m almost a bit jealous, always figured I’d be the one to make Becker break.”

Emily laughed. “So, Becker really is on all of our freebies’ lists, hu?”

Jess made a choked noise. “Not on mine, thank you very much!” James wasn’t quite sure whether she and Becker actually were together. In fact, he made it a point not knowing about it, despite both not being exactly subtle about any of it.

On the other hand, he could probably have lived with knowing about that if that meant he’d never have to hear Emily Merchant say “Oh, no worries, you’re on mine, too.” or watch her tangle her hand in Jess’s hair before leaning in for a tender kiss.

“Sir?” He whipped around and hastily switched off the monitor. The security guard had returned, a steaming mug in his hands and bags under his eyes. “I’ll take over again. Thank you.”

“Oh. I.” He cleared his throat. “That won’t be necessary. Take a break, I’ll… take care of this.” Somehow. Whatever his team was doing in there, he figured it happened on a strict need-to-know basis. And, really, nobody needed to know.

“I should not be enjoying watching this so much, should I?” Matt’s voice came from the speakers.

James switched off the audio before they could hear Abby’s response.

“Take a break.”

“Sir?”

“That’s an order.”

When James turned on the screen again, Abby’s hands were not on Jess’s arms anymore. And Jess was pressed up against Matt and Connor and Emily were… He turned the monitor off again.

It was probably preferable to them killing each other. Probably. Maybe. He could always shoot them himself, as soon as they got them out.
