“Merlin?”
He looked around and nodded.
“Merlin?”
“Yes, I’m here. Sorry.”
Merlin was sure that if Arthur still had control over his eyes, he would be rolling them now in exasperation. “You nodded, didn’t you?”
Merlin sighed. Normally, he would tease Arthur, come up with a flippant answer, but he didn’t feel like it tonight. “Yeah.”
Arthur took a deep breath, his shoulders sagging. He looked so lost on his massive four poster bed, gone was the proud King, the courageous warrior, the no-nonsense man. “What if this can’t be reversed? What do I do then?”
“You’ll still be King. It is your birth right.”
Arthur scoffed at that. “Only because my father killed the previous king. It has nothing to do with birth right and everything with being able to defend myself and my kingdom. How am I supposed to do that when I can’t even see?”
Merlin looked at Gwaine who had just entered the room through the side door. He had been about to knock to announce himself, but halted when he heard what Arthur was talking about.
“Because,” Merlin began. “You have men who are loyal to you, who have seen what you are capable of and follow you and the kingdom that you want to create. They will fight for you.”
Arthur fell backwards onto the bed, hands pressing into his eye sockets. “Only some will. Gwaine, and Percival, and the others, but there will be those who will contest my right to the throne, my ability to lead. And who can blame them. I wouldn’t even know what documents I’d sign. Who can I trust to always tell me the truth, to always tell me what I can’t see?”
Merlin hesitated. He knew that he’d be lying. He hadn’t always been trustworthy. The pause was lengthening into awkwardness, until Merlin finally said it.
“Me.” It was barely more than a whisper, but he knew Arthur had heard. He thought he could see a small smile on Arthur’s lips and his heart felt heavy.
Gwaine finally knocked, making Arthur sit up straight, back to the no-nonsense man that everyone knew.
“Yes.”
“Arthur, we think we found something. Gaius needs Merlin.”
Merlin could see the hope in Arthur’s face, who waved in the general direction of where he suspected Merlin to be – completely opposite to where Merlin actually was. “Yes, go Merlin. Get me my eyes back, please.”
“There is food on the table, by your usual seat.”
“Get out of here, Merlin. I’m fine.”
Merlin rolled his eyes and followed Gwaine out of the room.
