There was a knock on the office door but before Jason could tell his visitor that he was busy with cover planning and everything that wasn’t a priced stallion dropping into the middle of the yard could be redirected to his partner Frank, somebody cleared their throat. “Do you have a moment?”
“Actually, no—” Jason glanced up from his laptop and swallowed the rest of his sentence as he took in the sombre expression so uncharacteristic for the veterinarian waiting in the doorframe. Will hadn’t been scheduled to come by today and if he was here, that could only mean one thing. Jason swallowed. “Nereus?”
Will nodded. “I cleared the airway, again, but there’s not much we can do. Put him on a liquid diet, maybe, but you’d need to lock him into his box, remove the straw to make sure he doesn’t try to eat that.”
Jason put down his glasses to rub at his eyes tiredly. They had known this day would come but contrary to popular belief neither that nor experience nor professionalism made it any easier. Not if it was about Nereus. “Liquid diet?”
The veterinarian pulled a face. “It’s essentially torture. Nine times out of ten, it’s starving the horse slowly just because you won’t get all the calories in. And in the remaining case… He’s thirty-four years old, Jason.”
“Yes. Yes.” He sighed. “Have you talked to Frank already?” Frank had grown up with Nereus. His grandmother had taken in the parade horse and Frank had quite literally learned to ride before he could walk. Jason had never seen a horse as trusting or affectionate as Nereus. Around Frank, the Lipizzan was downright cuddly.
Another nod from Will. “He’s in the stable.”
Jason shut the laptop. “Thanks.”
He found Frank exactly where he’d expected him, in Nereus’ box, his head resting against the gelding’s and his hand buried deep in its grey mane.
Jason rested his arms on the wooden door behind him, not saying anything so as not to startle either horse or man.
“Will says there’s nothing he can do” Frank whispered finally. “His teeth are completely worn down.”
Jason didn’t say anything. There was nothing to be said, nothing they hadn’t said before. Nereus was thirty-four, they’d had this conversation and even if they hadn’t he knew that Frank would never let an animal suffer.
“I asked Will to come in tomorrow.” Frank said it matter-of-factly as though he was merely informing his business partner about his schedule. It broke Jason’s heart.
“I’ll be there.”
“You don’t have to.”
Jason thought about the cover schedule waiting in his office, the calls he needed to make to arrange for the live covers and the new trainee who would arrive tomorrow. And he thought about the day they’d officially moved in on their farm, four years ago. Only half of the stable had been finished, there’d been no electricity in the main house and a hole in the roof right above his bedroom. The only thing they’d gotten finished on schedule was Nereus’ box and Frank and he had spent the night in the straw next to it, lulled to sleep by the horse’s soft whinnying. They’d woken up with sore backs, covered in mosquito bites and knowing that they were exactly where they were meant to be.
“Yes I do.”
Without looking at him, Frank reached back and Jason took his hand to hold it in both of his.

Anyway, ja, bitte, gib mir eine angstige Idee, das könnte echt klappen! =D
