"So", Vala said in an uncharacteristically somber tone. "Let me see if I get this right… Your government--" Somehow she managed to make that one word sound like an insult and somehow, for once, Cam could't find it in himself to disagree. "Your government doesn't allow you to marry who you want but at least now you get to keep your job if you're not intending to marry someone of the other sex?"

Daniel Jackson groaned. "If you put it like that it doesn't quite…"

"That's stupid."

"Not so much stupid as the result of the complicated cultural history of homosexuality. Without this context, the cultural minutiae around this ruling--"

Cam rolled his eyes. They had been going in circles for what felt like hours. "Champagne?" He offered the bottle to Sam who shook her head and pointed to her still half-filled glass. Good, they were on duty still. Also, it left more for Cam who desperately needed that drink.

"Minutiae? I was under the assumption this was about sex?!"

"Yes, but…" Jackson didn't seem to know what to say to that. Pity, Cam would have enjoyed hearing that speech.

"I share her confusion, Daniel Jackson," Teal'c interjected. "Is there a stigma around unwed couples serving in the military?"

That had Cam laugh out loud. A bitter bark of a laugh that he drowned in the champagne Carolyn Lam had shared with the team in celebration of the appeal, before dancing away, gushing about her girlfriend. Lucky her.

"Only around some kind of unwed people," he muttered. "Awful, unfit people like Dr. Lam."

"Cam." Sam had placed her hand on his elbow and smiled. "As stupid as those rules might have been, Carolyn is right. Today is a day to celebrate, not to argue about cultural minutiae."

"I guess."

Vala tapped her empty champagne glass to her lips. "Well… if you say so. I still don't understand."

"Neither do I, Vala, neither do I." Cam topped his glass off again. "We have all kinds of prejudices and rules that never hold up to reality and the military has a few extra, just for good measure. There's no understanding them, cultural minutiae be damned."

Jackson pinched the bridge of his nose. "Mitchell…"

"Oh come on, don't tell me about changing interpretations of warrior culture over the centuries! Just, I don't know, drink champagne with us and ask when you'll finally get to meet Lynn, because for once I might actually answer."

That at least piqued Vala's interest. "Your girlfriend Lynn? The high school teacher?"

Jackson cleared his throat. "Vala, I think the Colonel tries to tell us that Lynn is, in fact, a man."

Vala rolled his eyes at him. "Well, duh, I've met him." Then her eyes widened and she turned back to Cam. "Oh! Is that why you insisted on not talking about him?!"

"Well, that was the rule. Until today."

"What a stupid rule."

Sam chuckled. "Well at least we all can agree on that."

Ugh, um DADT zu verstehen, braucht man echt ne Menge Champagner... und hinterher ist einem dann angemessenerweise auch noch schlecht.
Die vielen Namen verwirren mich, aber es gefällt mir. :)
