It sounded like angels were singing, soft voices carried over by the wind from the sea.
It let a shower run down Duke’s back and he had the urge to find the source. He wanted to know who these beautiful voices belonged to.
It all happened automatically, getting the Rouge ready to sail out.
It was pitch black, dark night, and Duke could barely see his hand in front of his face but he didn’t need to. He was guided by those voices. Didn’t need a map. Didn’t need to know where he was going. He just needed to find those voices.
The urge became unbearable. He knew he couldn’t rest until he found them. Found those angels.
Duke closed his eyes, only listened to the song. He couldn’t understand a word - it seemed like a foreign language. But still, a single tear ran down his face. The wave-like tune and the high voices touched his soul in a way Duke had never experienced before.
He cut the engine when the song was everywhere around him. He stepped on the deck, looking around on his boat, let his gaze wonder to the sky. There was nothing! Everything was just dark and black. Not even stars were visible.
But the song got louder and louder. The music invaded his body and Duke began to walk. He just wanted to find them. He needed to find them. Needed to know who and what these creatures were that had such beautiful voices.
He climbed on the rail and looked into the black depth of the sea. Little waves disrupted the water. There was something beneath the surface.
The song stopped. For a moment it was completely quiet.
Will you stay?
The voices weren’t around him anymore. It seemed like they came from within him now.
This could be your home now.
Duke was still staring at the water, trying to find the source. He shook his head, not sure what was happening. Where were these voices coming from?
Don’t fight it. We’re here for you.
Duke blinked a few times.
We’re here. You’re home. Just stay with us.
The voices repeated it over and over, mixed with each other or talked at the same time. In any other situation Duke would have covered his ears, tried to block the noise, but now he just thrived in it.
He spread his arms -
You’re safe with us, Duke.
- and let himself fall.
