It war hard to distinguish what was going on around him. His eyesight left him first. He could only see in blurs. It didn’t make it easy to make out his opponents to spit them in the face. That was the next problem. His mouth was so dry that he was thirsty all the time. He even had trouble swallowing and sometimes his voice didn’t do what he wanted it to do.
His hearing actually worked fine but his concentration faded which made it harder to focus on the sounds around him, bring them in some kind of order so that he could figure out what was going on.
He noticed that someone had walked into his cell but he only noticed the difference to the other visits when someone was touching him, not roughly at his arms or hair but gently cupping his cheek. “Cowboy? Can you hear me?”
A slight smile played around Solo’s lips. He moved his head and tried to make out his partner but it was only a grey blur in front of a black blur. “Hearing works fine,” he said and was happy that his voice actually worked. But using his mouth only reminded him that his mouth was dry as a desert. Out of habit he smacked but it didn’t help at all. Probably only water could get him a relief. Solo doubted though that Illya had something on him.
“Can you stand?”
“Didn’t try it.” His body felt weird. He was not actually in pain but something was off. Unsurprisingly though. After all he had been injected with an unknown substance. And Solo doubted that it had been something good. Not that he wanted to think the worst of his enemies but it was usual something bad.
Illya pulled him up and Solo could feel his legs buckle. For a while now he had a stomach ache and the sudden movement probably did the rest. He bowed forward and emptied his stomach on the floor. “Not good,” he whispered.
“I’ll get you out.” Illya put Solo’s arm around his shoulder and literally dragged him along. Solo only could try to make some steps beside him.
“Wait, stop!”
Normally Illya barely listened to him but this time he stopped immediately. “You’re sick. You need doctor.”
“Yeah, that’s just it. They gave me something.”
Solo still couldn’t see much but he was sure that Illya’s face contorted in anger. Although he barely admitted to it, Illya was very protective of his team. He cared a lot. And although they hadn’t worked together that long Solo knew him pretty well by now. His first reaction was anger.
“You should get intel not end up as guinea pig.” His voice got louder and Solo could hear clearly the anger in it. He knew that it wasn’t actually directed at him but Solo had the luck to be the only one around right now. “What was it?”
“Don’t know, couldn’t find out before they got me.” Solo was still disappointed with himself that he hadn’t been more attentive.
“Then we need to find out now.”
Solo wanted to nod and he hoped he had managed. “You go. I’ll stay.” Solo was no big help. He couldn’t see. He could barely move. And he was about to vomit again.
“I’m not leaving-”
“Illya!” They used their real names rarely and it had the effect that he wanted. Illya was quiet. “I’m no help. You’re faster alone.”
“You’re my partner. I’m not-” This time Illya stopped on his own and suddenly Solo was back on the ground. Solo had no idea what was going on but the sound of two men fighting sounded over to him. He tried to make something out but still only blurs. The sounds though were enough. He knew how Illya was fighting and right now he pushed the other man against the wall. “What did you give him?”
The man just laughed and Solo recognized the voice. It was the scientist.
“Your friend will die.”
A punch to the face. “What did you give him?” Illya repeated with a lot more anger in his voice.
The scientist didn’t seem to be bothered too much. He still sounded amused. “His whole body goes into a paralysis. Step by step.”
“You tell me how to fix him.”
“There is no fixing him. Did he vomit already?” Solo could practically see the crazy smile of the man. And suddenly he knew that there was no hope. Even if there was an antidote Illya would never get the information out of the man in time. He was only a scientist but he seemed like he wouldn’t tell Illya anything, not even after some hard punches. Illya could be terrifying so Solo knew that the man wouldn’t budge, not when he didn’t show any symptoms of fear so far.
“The paralysis is attacking his inner organs. After the stomach comes the lung and the heart. You can imagine what will happen then, right?”
Illya let out a loud cry. He was really angry. His hands were probably shaking like crazy. And right now Solo just wanted to hold them to calm him down. Solo was not worth falling into old habits. Illya had made so much progress lately. He shouldn’t be the reason that all of this was for nothing.
“Illya,” he said but it was more like a croak.
“You will tell me how to fix him.” Illya’s voice was ice cold and he could only imagine how intimidating he must look right now. This man had to be crazy to be unaffected like that. Even Solo had had a lot of respect the first day they met. Hell, Illya had almost stopped a car with his bare hands. You had to be intimidated by that.
“What will you do? Kill me?”
The only reason the scientist was still alive was probably because he was the man that could help him and Illya knew that. As angry as Illya was this man would have been dead ten times already if he wouldn’t need him anymore.
“After what I will do to you, you wished to be dead.”
“This won’t help your friend.”
Solo wanted to stand up, to get over to Illya and calm him down but his stomach twisted again and emptied itself on the floor. Solo collapsed with a grunt on his back. He felt dizzy and exhausted. He just wanted to sleep.
But his tense body made it hard to shut down. His stomach wasn’t the only thing that hurt. His chest felt as if someone was sitting on top of it. It made it hard to breathe. Wait, what did that scientist say? His organs were shutting down? Not good then.
“Illya,” he tried again. If this was his end he didn’t want to be alone.
Some dull noises sounded over to him and then there was a touch at his arm. “Don’t go,” he said, knowing full well that Illya still wanted to find an antidote for this. But sometimes there wasn’t such a thing. Or sometimes there wasn’t enough time.
“I won’t,” Illya said.
Solo took some deep breaths, having difficulty to get air into his lungs, and dug his fingers into Illya’s arm. He wished he could see Illya one last time but his vision had gotten even worse. There was almost only black now. “Was great,” a deep breath, “working with you,” another deep breath, “Peril.” Solo would have never imagined that this man would become such a good friend and partner to him. But he was.
“You too, Cowboy.”
Solo wouldn’t have thought to ever open his eyes again, to actually see again, but here he was, lying in the bed of his fancy hotel room. Instinctively he pinched himself to make sure that wasn’t a dream.
“If you’re asking yourself how you’re still alive, you have to thank me for that.”
A smile formed on Solo’s lips while turning his head to the voice. “You smart and clever girl.”
Gaby just shrugged with her shoulders. “You were late so Waverly worried about you two. He mumbled something about that he will never leave you two alone on a mission again. You need your clever girl.” Gaby winked at him. “I located you through Illya’s bugs.”
“And you just happened to stumble over the antidote?”
“I stumbled into the laboratory, yes. And your cell had been taped so I knew what was going on. I questioned the nice scientist for some intel and they gave me the antidote. I just needed to ask nicely.”
“I’m sure you did.”
“I wasn’t as nice as Illya.”
Solo remembered only vaguely what happened in the minutes before he passed out. “Is this guy alive?”
Gaby leaned back in her chair. “Barely. He was already pretty beaten up when I came in. Illya was furious.”
“How is he?”
“Calmed down a bit. It got better when we knew that you’d make it.”
“I’m sorry for getting caught.” Solo still was very disappointed with himself, especially now that he knew that he worried both Illya and Gaby with his negligence.
“It happens to the best, Solo. That’s why we have partners. We don’t need to do stuff like this alone anymore.”
Solo smiled at her. “I like having partners.”
“Even this big russian baby?” Gaby smirked at him.
“Even him, yes.”
“I will tell him that. You should rest a little more. We got two vacation days from Waverly. Then we have to head back to headquarters for a full report.”
“Two days sound good.” His whole body was still hurting. He could use the rest. “But don’t you dare tell Peril. He’ll kill me if he knew I liked him.”
Gaby smiled softly. “Are you sure about that?”
He was probably just exaggerating but you never knew with the Red Peril. “Let’s just say I don’t want to take that risk.”
Gaby patted his shoulder. “Okay, I'll keep your secret for now. But you really need to rest now.”
Solo nodded and closed his eyes. In just a few seconds he fell asleep.
