“Red Alert,” Christine said while sitting down at the table, opposite of Nyota.
“Again?”
Christine leaned forward, whispering now, “I definitely saw him enter the Captain’s quarters.”
Nyota’s mouth fell open. “No.” Disbelief and shock wavered in her voice. They were playing this game for a few weeks now, since Doctor McCoy had joined their little crew. At first it was innocent but now Christine and Nyota were convinced that the Captain and the CMO had some kind of affair, code word: “Red Alert”.
“I can’t believe it. Doctor McCoy seems like such a nice guy.”
“He is. A little grumpy now and then but a very good man.”
Nyota leaned back. “And totally married.”
“Maybe it’s an old wedding ring? I tried to ask him some questions but he dodges every time. He seems like a very private person. I couldn’t get anything out of him. I’m not even sure if he is married to a man or woman.”
“So you think his husband or wife could be deceased?”
Christine shrugged. “Could be a possibility, right? Maybe he still is very attached to them.”
“Yeah, well,” Nyota took her spoon and filled it with ice cream, pointing it to Christine as if she just figured something out, “but we know for sure that the Captain is married right in this moment.” Another shake of her head followed. “Jim always talked about Bones with such love in his voice. I can’t believe he could do something like that.”
“Me neither.” Christine seemed so sad all of a sudden.
“Maybe we’re just seeing things. Maybe Doctor McCoy went to the Captain’s quarters to deliver his report or something like that.”
“And what about all the times Jim has picked Len up from medbay?”
Nyota shrugged. “Jim always says that getting to know his crew is important. Doctor McCoy is a high ranking officer. It’s only logical that he wants to get to know him? Maybe they had dinner together and talked.”
“What about the looks?”
Christine listed every single thing they had observed over the last few weeks which made it really hard to find arguments against their theory. The looks couldn’t be denied. There was definitely something there. Nyota knew her fair share about body language and these two seemed so familiar with each other. They always relaxed when the other was in the room and they talked to each other with a lightheartedness as if they knew each other for many many years.
So Nyota sighed in the end. “Maybe we should ask someone else? Just to get a second opinion?”
“Do you think that’s a good idea? You know this crew. Rumours spread like wildfire here.”
Nyota looked around, watching the people in the break room. “Maybe we need someone who can keep a secret,” Nyota said and turned around. “Commander Spock, do you have a moment?”
Christine grabbed Nyota’s arm and whispered, “Do you think that’s a good idea?”
“He will share his honest opinion.”
“Yeah, but Vulcans don’t really understand emotions, right? They think they’re useless. I doubt that Spock would realize that something was going on even if it happened right in front of his nose.”
“We can ask different people but we can at least be sure that he won’t gossip around.”
Christine nodded. “Fine, you’re right.” Even if Christine had wanted to point out some more things she hadn’t the time anymore. Spock had already come over.
“How can I help you, Lieutenant?”
“I was wondering if you could help us with a problem. We’d like to hear your opinion on it.”
“Of course. What is the matter?” Spock remained standing, hands on his back.
Nyota didn’t bother to ask him to sit down. She just started. “So we noticed some exchanges between the Captain and the new Chief Medical Officer. For example the Captain picking the Doctor up in medbay after shift or the Doctor entering the Captain’s quarters. We think that they might have a relationship of some kind.”
Both Nyota and Christine watched Spock closely, trying to decipher the expression on his face but he looked like always. Nyota expected him to deny their crazy thoughts but instead he agreed. “Of course they do.”
Nyota was too baffled to say anything so Christine jumped in, “So you’re saying you think they have an…” She didn’t dare to say the word but Spock nodded.
“An intimate relationship, yes!”
Christine and Nyota looked at each other, completely taken aback. “Do you need anything else?” Spock asked.
Nyota just shook her head, still completely in disbelief. “No, commander, thanks for your help.”
“Anytime, Lieutenant.”
As soon as Spock was gone Christine leaned forward. “I can’t believe it,” she whispered. “A Vulcan is seeing it, too.”
Nyota raised an eyebrow. “I’m not so sure about that. Spock surely could have seen some of the glances or have seen them together. But he wouldn’t be so sure that they have a relationship based on these facts. He knows that they do.”
“He caught them?” Christine asked, an amused smile on her face.
“I think he has some information that we don’t.”
“Which would be?”
“Captain Kirk and Doctor McCoy are married … to each other.”
Christine’s mouth fell open. “How the hell could we have been so blind?”
“I don’t know.” Nyota was disappointed with herself. “I mean, the Captain only calls his husband ‘Bones’. We never heard his real name. I can’t believe that we didn’t think earlier about it.”
“Maybe it was the Captain’s fault. He’d talked about his husband all the time. Maybe we thought that he would be all over him when they were around each other.”
“You two are no fun,” Jim’s voice suddenly sounded over to them and he sat down in a elegant motion. “It’s been only three weeks. I’ve bet with Bones that we could make it to at least six.”
Nyota smiled. That sounded a lot more like their Captain. A stupid bet. “Spock ratted you out.”
“What? I really need to talk to my first officer. I personally asked him to keep this information quiet. I mean I even used big words like favoritism. I didn’t want the crew to think that I would favoritise him over all of you.”
“I’m sure that was your highest concern, sir,” Nyota said with a chuckle.
Jim smiled innocently. “You’re too smart, Uhura. What do I have to do that you pretend not to know anything?”
“Sir, I hope you’re aware that Doctor McCoy is my boss. I won’t hold any information back from him,” Christine said with a smug smile.
“What was the stake anyway?” Nyota wanted to know.
Jim’s smile got cocky. “You’re sure you want to know, Lieutenant?”
“Don’t pretend if it’s anything dirty.” Leonard sat down next to Christine. “I have full say on his meal plan for a month. No wonder he wants to convince you to keep quiet that you know.”
“Awww, Bones, you’re no fun,” Jim complained with a pout.
“Why? Because I thought that this game was stupid right from the beginning?”
“You purposely threw me some dirty glances so the crew would find out. The bet’s off.”
“What?” Leonard exclaimed and started to list every little interaction they had and how professional he acted. “You on the other hand,” he started and went on listing all of the things Jim had done.
Nyota threw a look over to Christine and made a motion with her head that they should get away. Jim and Leonard didn’t even notice when they made themselves scarce.
“So what do we call it now?” Christine asked. “Green alert?”
Nyota laughed and tucked her arm into Christine’s. “It’s definitely green alert. Look how cute they’re together.”
“You think we’re as cute as they are?”
Nytoa gave Christine a little peck on the cheek. “We’re definitely cuter, that’s for sure.”
