Nathan raised his gun, ready to take the shot when the whole world started spinning around. He had been hit by something and was thrown through the air.
It took him some moments to realize that he laid on the ground. His vision was still messing with him, his surroundings dancing around him. Nathan tried to focus and organize his thoughts.
There was a troubled person. And then he was flying through the air. And - Duke! Where was Duke?
Nathan tried to sit up but it turned out to be harder than expected. Hopefully there wasn’t anything broken.
“Nathan! Shit, stay still.”
A little smile formed on Nathan’s lips when he heard the voice of his friend. “Where is the troubled person?”
“I don’t know. Gone I guess. It felt like a hurricane what he threw at us. I flew a few yards. When I was back on my feet he was gone. Probably used the distraction to get away.”
“You’re hurt?” Nathan tried to sit up again and this time his body cooperated. He got a glance at Duke and could see the bloodied smear on his face. His eyes widened. “Shit, Duke!”
He wanted to crawl over to him but Duke stretched out his arm. “Stop, you’ll hurt yourself even more.”
A little confused Nathan looked down at himself. Normally that was his first instinct but this time his worry for Duke had let him forget about that. So only now he saw that he sat in the middle of a sea of shards. He must have flown through the glass front of the shop they were currently in. “How bad?” He asked. Nathan could see a few scratches on him but the majority of his injuries would probably be on his back.
“Can’t tell. Just be careful.” Duke looked around, apparently searching for something. Suddenly he jumped up and grabbed the curtains which only hung on a small thread anymore. He yanked them free and put them on the ground just next to Nathan. “This will give you a little protection from the glass.” Duke walked over to help Nathan.
Nathan tried to abstützen with his hands on the cloth. Right now he was really happy not to feel anything. This would have been painful. And he was happy that Duke stood right next to him. The moment Nathan was standing upright his surroundings started to spin again. He was sure that he had been back on the way to the floor but Duke grabbed him, held him up.
“Woah, Nate, easy,” he said, watching him intensely, clear worry in his eyes.
“I’m fine,” Nathan said out of habit.
“Sure you are.” With Duke’s help Nathan made it to a safe spot on the floor a few steps away. Nathan insisted that he was fine to walk but Duke pushed him back down. “Trust me on this, Nate.”
Nathan detected a slight tremble in Duke’s voice and it made him uneasy. Of course Duke worried, a lot, he cared way too much for his friends but this was different. It made Nathan worry too, especially because he couldn’t see his own wounds for himself. He relied on his other senses to the fact that he couldn’t feel but right now he couldn’t help himself.
“Tell me, Duke, how bad is it really?” He asked again. Duke turned to him and put his phone back into his pocket. Nathan had to lose focus because he didn’t even notice that Duke had called someone.
“There is a lot of blood, Nate.”
Duke cupped his cheek and Nathan desperately wished that he could feel it. Right now he had this lingering fear that he wouldn’t feel anything ever again, that he wouldn't live long enough to see the end of the Troubles. He just had to look at Duke and he was sure about it. This was it. Ended by a little glass in his back.
Suddenly he had to think back to that prank Duke pulled on him when they were little. He let out a dry laugh.
“What’s so funny about that?” Duke asked.
“Just had to think of something.” Nathan was still amazed that Duke and he became such good friends afterwards.
“About what?”
“About us.”
Duke smiled. “Yeah, well, that is indeed funny. A cop and a criminal working together.”
“Friends, Duke. We’re friends.”
Duke’s smile turned soft. The concern in his eyes had briefly vanished, making room for pure love. At least Nathan hoped that it was that what Duke was showing.
“I don’t regret that.” There had been times where it was difficult between them. Where they had been enemies. Where someone might think that they hated each other. But that wasn’t true. Nathan never hated Duke. For that he loved him way too much. “Never have.”
“Nate..”
“You should know that. I need you to know that.”
“I do. I know.”
Nathan was sure that Duke stroked with his thumb over his cheek. Or he liked to imagine it. It was a nice thought to have as a last thought.
“Good,” he whispered, feeling himself get tired. Duke’s form started to blur in front of him. He vanished and came back again but anytime a little more blurred.
“No, no, Nathan, stay with me,” he heard his pleas but Nathan was too tired now to answer. “Come on, stay awake.”
Duke sounded so scared that Nathan wanted to obey, just to see him smile but he couldn’t do it.
“Please, Nathan, don’t leave me.”
The sound of Duke’s frantic voice was the last thing that Nathan heard before the darkness swallowed him whole.

When Nathan woke up again he felt a hand holding his own. For a moment he thought he might actually have died and now was able to feel until he opened his eyes and saw Audrey sitting next to his bed.
“Did you get him?” he asked immediately.
Audrey turned around and smiled at him. “Yeah, I talked to him. He got it under control now.”
“Good.” Nathan looked around. Except for Audrey the room was empty. “Where’s Duke?” Somehow Nathan had hoped that Duke would be here. He’d seemed so scared and worried but maybe Nathan had false memories. It was all a big blur. Maybe he just imagined things.
“He was here until I came and forced him to get checked out by a doctor.”
Nathan remembered the big bloody wound on Duke’s head. “He’s okay though?”
Audrey smiled softly. “He should be okay, yes, I just wanted to be sure. He has been away a while now, probably back any moment now.”
As if Duke had heard Audrey the door opened. “How is our sleeping beauty?” he asked immediately.
“Not sleeping anymore,” Audrey answered with a big smile.
Duke fastened his pace to get to the bed and look at Nathan. He let out a long sigh and smiled. “Good to see you awake, Nate.”
“Good to see you, too. What do you got there?” Nathan pointed to Duke’s head which was graced by a little bandaid.
Duke smiled smugly. “Five stitches,” he said proudly.
Nathan shook his head. “Only you could be proud of something like that.”
“It’s a battle wound, Nate. Like a real pirate.”
“So I am a pirate now, too?” Nathan raised an eyebrow.
“Of course. But you could do it less dramatic the next time around, okay?” For a second the worry on Duke’s face shown again, remembering Nathan how close it had been this time. So he just nodded. “Promise.”
