Shiro had wanted to drop Lance off on the floor of the cargo bay but Lance needed to see Keith. Shiro only looked briefly at him and he knew he had no time to argue so he just took him along to the cockpit. With only one man beside him it was way harder to jump on one leg only but somehow they made it upstairs. Shiro let him slide to the ground just next to Keith and then made his way over to the seat to start the lion.
Lance didn’t care about Shiro, just had eyes for Keith. He was dangerously pale and the one half of his face was covered in blood. The only good thing was that he was still breathing.
“Oh, Keith,” Lance mumbled and slid a little closer. He shut his eyes tightly when a stab of pain went through his leg.
“How is he?” The voice of Shiro sounded over to him.
“Still alive.” That was all that Lance dared to say. He had no idea if the wound on Keith’s head was the only injury he had endured. But even if it was. It was bad enough. Head wounds were dangerous. “Shiro,” he added but was unable to say more, his voice breaking before more words could come out.
“I know. I’m hurrying. We just need to pick up Hunk and then we can get him to a doctor.”
Lance absentmindedly ran his fingers through Keith’s hair. “He told us that you never gave up on him.”
“And I won’t now!” Shiro said while he was rushing past him. “I’ll get Hunk on board. Look after him.”
Lance nodded and rested his head against the wall behind him. Lance was exhausted and in pain but he would stay awake until Keith was safe. His mind took him back to all the times one of them had been hurt. It had never been this bad and with the healing pods in the Castle it had never been something to worry about because they could heal almost anything. Right now they hadn’t something like the healing pods so Lance was worried. Of course they had all been ready to die when they carried this giant machine out into space so that Earth would be safe but Lance had hoped that they would be okay after all. He had always been unrealistic optimistic. Now seeing Keith so pale and bruised he couldn’t be anymore. He was faced with the cold and hard truth.
“Veronica and I always patched each other up when we got a scratch or something like that. We used these bandaids for kids with ridiculous motives on them like funny animals or pirates. I’m sorry I don’t have any on me right now.” Lance was still playing with Keith’s hair. “There were also some with planets and stars on them. Would be perfect for you, right?” Lance wished he could just put a bandaid on Keith’s head and everything would be fine again. Kosmo whimpered and licked the hand that was tangled in Keith’s hair. “I know, girl, I’m scared, too.”
Shortly after Shiro rushed back into the cockpit, telling him that he had Hunk and his family on board. Lance sighed in relief and he felt a smile on his face at the thought that Hunk finally had his family back. Keith would say that this all had been worth it then. If Keith survived Lance would feel the same.
It didn’t take long to get to the Atlas after that. Shiro was so careful when he picked up Keith as if he was made out of glass. And he looked so scared and worried.
“He’ll be okay, Shiro. Keith’s a fighter.” A few minutes ago he hadn’t been sure himself, he wasn’t even sure now but he knew he had to say something to Shiro. He couldn’t stand the way he looked.
Shiro only nodded. “I’ll be back to get you.”
“Yes, go,” Lance said and pushed him towards the exit. “Get him to someone who can help. I’ll be fine.”
Kosmo stood up as well just to sit down right next to Lance, looking after Shiro and Keith.
“You can go with them. You don’t have to stay with me.”
Kosmo just nudged his arm with his nose. Lance tangled his fingers into his fur. “Thanks,” he whispered. “I know you would prefer to be with Keith right now, so thanks.”
Kosmo licked over his cheeks and only then Lance realised he was crying. “I couldn’t protect him. I’m supposed to protect him. I’m his right hand,” he mumbled and slung his arms around Kosmo, hiding his face in his soft fur. “And what is with the others? I don’t know how Hunk is doing. We don’t know anything about Pidge and Allura. What if I’m the only one who’s okay? That's … that’s-" Lance broke up, his voice leaving him.
Suddenly there was a hand on his shoulder. “They’ll all be okay.”
Lance looked up to find Coran smiling at him. “Shiro send me to get you.”
“I’m okay. I want to stay to find the other two.”
Coran’s expression turned soft. “Lance, please, you need treatment too.”
“I’m fine,” he insisted again. Though he was in horrible pain he wasn’t in such a bad shape as Keith was. He could stay here and get the other two, make sure they were okay.
“Look at you. You’re on the brink of passing out. You’re forcing your body to stay awake. That’s not healthy. You’ll risk more damage than necessary that way.”
“I need to know if they’re okay.”
“And you’ll find out as soon as we bring them back. Shiro and I will get them!”
Lance shook his head. “No, I-"
“Lance,” Coran interrupted him. “I know you’re worried. We all are. But you can’t put their lives before your own, not when they are other people who can help. I for sure know that Allura would feel guilty to hear that your injuries got worse just because you were stubborn enough to look for her.”
Lance looked up to Coran, contemplating what he had said, just to sigh defeated in the end. “Okay, help me up.” He stretched out his arms so Coran could haul him up.
Getting back on his feet was difficult and painful. For a second he thought he actually might pass out. There were black spots in his vision but he managed to stay awake. “Thanks, Coran,” he said after a while, realizing that it would have been very bad for him to have stayed stubborn.
“No need for gratitude, Lance. Allura might be my princess but all of you palladins are my responsibility.”
“You’ll get her, right?”
“Of course I will.”
