Julian had managed to “accidentally” have his dinner in the same place some of Lewis’ colleagues had theirs. He had taken a seat next to their table and listened in on their conversation in the hope of catching something useful. Unfortunately, they didn’t exchange gossip about their work-mates but argued about cricket. Julian suppresses a sigh. If he’d known this he would have asked Ned to accompany him. He’d never heard of the player they were talking about.

A tall dark-haired man put down his glass with some force.

“I’m telling you. He could become as big as Grace.”

Not for the first time in his life Julian did something rash. He turned around, tried to sound like he was far more involved in the game than he’d ever been and exclaimed: “Nobody will ever be as big as W. G. Grace.”

“That’s what I’ve been saying all day.” The red-head who had voiced this opinion indicated the empty chair next to him, inviting Julian to join him. Apparently, he was grateful to have found someone who shared his admiration for W. G. Julian could only pray that he wasn’t expected to back this up with any facts because being aware that Grace existed and had extraordinary talent pretty much exhausted his expertise on the subject.

To his relief, his new friend didn’t need any support. He knew all of Grace’s accomplishments without any prompting and kept listing them until the other downed the last of his beer and asked Julian if he wanted another one as well. He accepted thankfully and while he went to fetch it Julian finally introduced himself. His neighbour blushed. “Oh, right. My name’s Marcus Grant. And he,” he gestured towards the bar, “is Felix. Felix Goldsmith.”

“Well, I’m pleased to meet you.”

After Goldsmith’s return, the conversation was less one-sided and Julian could finally join in. Not that it brought him any results. He could hardly question them out of nowhere on Lewis. But he could at least steer the topic towards metaphysics and sing the praises of a talented metaphysician he worked with.

“I work at an antique’s store and of course we need to protect our valuables. It’s great that we don’t have to call in a professional everytime we need to renew the spells. It really saves time and money.”

“I can imagine that. But Grant here wouldn’t be able to distinguish one end of a wand from the other. And I learnt some basics back at university, enough to help with some easy chores. I think that already makes me the most qualified person in the bank.”

Grant disagreed. “Fellowes has taken some course on forgery detection.”

“Right. I had forgotten about that. But I’d be surprised if he can do as much as heat up water. And the one time he suspected something of being false, they still called an expert in.”

The discussion trailed off again. So it seemed Lewis wasn’t particularly talented. Or he kept it under wraps. Or he wasn’t close with those two. Or they had simply forgotten. That were a lot of ‘ors’ and Julian wondered if he’d achieved anything with his stunt.

Mhm, das war ja eher nichts. Aber vielleicht fällt ja doch noch ein Bröckchen Information für ihn ab? Verdient hätte er sich das ja mit seinem Einsatz...
