„Any news?” Julian asked when Ned walked in.
“Oh yes.” He removed his coat and fell on the couch. “The Canadian nephew.”
“He isn’t in Canada after all?” That would solve one question.

“No. Or yes. Well, it all depends…”

Julian rolled his eyes. “Stop talking in riddles.”

“He’s dead.” Before Julian could ask anything Ned had continued: “He died before Hyde.”

“So, what does that mean for the inheritance? Does the nephew’s family get everything now?”

Ned sighed. “Unlikely. He was married but had no children. And only he was mentioned in the will. If the wife sues her chances will be slim. At least that’s what Hatton says.”

“So, who gets the money?”

Ned grinned. “The son after all it seems.”

“But he was disinherited!”

“Technically yes. He left the money someone else. No clause that said the son shouldn’t get it. So, with the heir dead…”

“The next blood relative gets it.”

“Probably. You know lawyers. No straight answers. And that includes the one Hatton and I talked to. It was well known that he disliked his son. But that’s no proof in court.”

Julian remembered something. “How did he die? And when exactly?”

“10 days ago. And an accident. Hatton is trying to learn more from the Canadian police.”

“Hm,” Julian said. “If Richard knew this…”

“We still wouldn’t know how he got in. And how would he have found out?”

Julian shrugged. “Almost two weeks is enough time for a letter. Not to mention a telegram.”

“From the neighbour who’s spying on him? On Richard Hyde’s order?”

“Or from the wife. He’s family after all. You notify the family of a deceased person.”

Ned still wasn’t convinced. “And she didn’t tell old Hyde?”

“How do we know that?”

Ned sighed and rolled his eyes. “Because he hadn’t changed his will.”

“He might have intended to change it. He might have thought it wasn’t urgent. He was healthy after all. Or he wanted the money to stay in the family. More than he wanted to disinherit his son.”

Ned opened his mouth and closed it again. Finally, he said: “That’s a good point, actually.”

He grinned. “See? There’s a reason you’re keeping me around.”

Ned leaned over to kiss him. “There are a lot of reasons.” He opened the top button of Julian’s shirt. “You’re amazing intellect is only one of them.” Another button. “Would you like to hear about the other reasons?”

Julian smirked. “Please enlighten me.” He let Ned open another button. Then he started working on Ned’s shirt. “Because I have absolutely no idea what you mean.”
