Inhalt: Keiji loses and gains a charge.
Mal was anderes. (und sollte daher lesbar für jeden sein? Man muss praktisch nix vom Original wissen lol).
Bisher klappts ganz gut. Go me!)
It all starts with Mayumi's heart stopping. For two days, Keiji watches her body go through the decaying process, before a neighbor notices her absence and calls the police to break into her apartment. For two days, Keiji's black sack remains empty. For two days, Keiji doesn't move from the corner he's settled in two days ago.
When they finally retrieve Mayumi's body and start moving her out, Keiji stirs, and follows them outside.
It's sunny out, and warm, felt even through the perpetual layer of cold between him and the living world. It shouldn't be sunny. It shouldn't be so cheery, when another light's just gone out.
"Akaashi."
He turns to the side, sees Owari before he spots Takashi, Owari's charge, standing outside with a horrified look on his face, observing the men at work.
"That Mayumi?" Owari asks calmly.
Keiji is glad he's here. He's the only other reaper Keiji feels close to.
After Keiji died, Owari was the one to take him under his wing. He says he felt it like his duty, something that happens to a random reaper when another is made. Even then, Owari never complained about Keiji's greenness.
"You're so young," Owari says sometimes, with a grave look on his face, as if disappointed in and disheartened by a world that lets people kill teenagers.
Keiji always shrugs. What else can he do? It is what it is.
"Yes…" Keiji's gaze follows the black body bag Mayumi is in. There isn't the faintest beat of the heart. Keiji doesn't even have to concentrate much to feel that lack, that void that has taken its place, when it used to beat wildly so often.
Owari lets Keiji watch Mayumi being driven away in silence, lets him look into the direction she left in long after the wagon has disappeared from view.
But he stays, even when Takashi puts a hand on a distressed Mari's shoulder (the neighbor who called the police and was present when they broke in) and gets her back inside.
"She was only beginning to get good at knitting," Keiji says. "Made a triumphant noise when she got that one stitch right. Then she just- went limp in the chair. She was only 43."
Owari's expression is pensive when he looks at Keiji, but he still doesn't say anything.
Mayumi had a crush on Mari. Keiji remembers her meeting her new neighbor for the first time, blushing a little as she said hello, then berating herself as soon as she'd closed the door behind her, safe in her apartment.
She never mustered up enough courage to confess to Mari. Maybe, if her life hadn't been cut so short, she would have.
Keiji breathes in shakily. He wasn't supposed to get attached. Wasn't supposed to care. And yet, here he is, feeling a heavy weight settle on his heart.
Owari takes one sharp look at him, then floats over and lets his hand rest on Keiji's shoulder, firm and reassuring, and deathly cold.
"Come with me, kid. I'll show you someone."
"I don't want a new charge so soon," Keiji blurts, and immediately looks down, because this is exactly what one says who got attached, even though he shouldn't have.
"We reapers aren't forbidden to care about charges, you know."
Keiji does. But he didn't plan to care. He didn't want to care. Because he knew from the beginning that it would end this way. He didn't know it'd be this soon.
"A new charge will keep you busy."
Keiji lets out a shuddering sigh. He knows Owari is probably right. He is older than Keiji by twenty-one years for his physical body, and he claims to be around since the Yayoi period, and Keiji believes him.
"Let's go."
Keiji's pulled away from the place they're at and Owari… teleports them, for lack of a better word, to another destination. It feels a little like falling and at the same time driving in a convertible at full speed, the whole world moving by in a whirl of muted colors.
Keiji still hasn't mastered that form of travelling. He can't seem to get the hang of it.
"Where are we?" Keiji looks around. It's one of those typical suburban neighborhoods with houses on each side of the road.
"Some of Takashi's students live here." Owari takes him down the street to the house with the number 13.
It's definitely a family home and Keiji wonders why Owari thought a family might be the right place for him now.
Mayumi never visited her own family during Keiji's stay with her. Five months, almost half a year.
Keiji takes a deep breath.
Then the door swings open abruptly and loudly, and a boy around Keiji's age storms out and right through Keiji before he can even let out the breath he took in. He shudders violently and feels his hairs stand up sharply.
He wasn't prepared. Nothing could have prepared him for the rapid-fire heartbeat of this boy with the strange hair and stranger eyes.
"I think you'll be able to effect something here."
Owari squeezes his shoulder and leaves, not giving Keiji any time to think. Instead, Keiji has to rush after the boy so as not to lose sight of him, being pulled by an invisible force that connected him to the boy's heart instantly.
It's not hard to follow the strong beating of the boy's heart, and Keiji's black sack fills almost on its own.
