Wyatt had just wanted to get a bottle of beer because he couldn’t sleep when he noticed Flynn sleeping on the couch right next to the kitchen. It wasn’t his first instinct to stay but it was his second after he heard those heartbreaking noises coming from Flynn. Then he noticed the opened bottle of vodka on the table in front of the couch. Now there was no way he was leaving. Wyatt opened his bottle and then walked over to the couch. He was considering just to sit down but when Flynn mumbled a couple of “No”s and “Don’t”s and it sounded like he was going to cry any minute now Wyatt couldn’t just stand by.
He carefully grabbed his shoulder and shook him awake. Flynn startled out of his dream, looking around a little disoriented until his eyes focused on Wyatt. His gaze became cold. “What do you want?”
Wyatt raised his hands in defence. “Just wanted to check if you’re okay. Sounded like you had a nightmare.”
“I’m fine,” Flynn grumbled, sitting up and reaching for the bottle of Vodka.
“You’re sure?” Wyatt asked, sitting down on the little table so he could look straight into Flynn’s face.
“I don’t think this is any of your business.” Flynn’s voice lacked the usual charming sarcasm. He was just plain defensive. So Wyatt knew that he was really hurt. And that was no surprise. Even Wyatt had a hard time after this mission. It was the reason why he couldn’t sleep but it had to be so much worse for Flynn.
“Do you want to talk about it?” Wyatt tried again. He knew they weren’t the best friends yet but at least they tolerated each other and Wyatt had learned to trust him despite their past. He couldn’t let a team member suffer on his own.
Flynn took a big sip of Vodka. “There is nothing to talk about.”
“It wasn’t your fault, Flynn. There is nothing you could have done.”
Flynn scoffed. “What are you trying to do here, Logan? Play nice? For what?”
In any other situation Wyatt would have let it go at this point. When the other didn’t want any help it made no sense to try to force him to open up. But Wyatt could imagine what Flynn was going through and if he would be in his shoes now he would like some company, no matter who it would be. So he just sat down next to him, completely quiet and just drank his beer.
Flynn didn’t protest any more from there on. They just sat silently next to each other, both with their drinks in hand.
“I know it’s not my fault,” Flynn whispered after a long time.
Wyatt nodded. “That’s good. Because it wasn’t,” Wyatt repeated so that Flynn actually believed it.
“Doesn’t make it easier,” Flynn kept going.
Wyatt just nodded. Sometimes they had to do impossible choices on their missions. Either be human or make sure that history stayed in tact. It was always hard to watch people die - even if they were supposed to die. But if there were children involved it was so much harder.
“You’re gonna be okay?” Wyatt knew what Flynn had gone through, knew how old memories had to come back after such a day.
“You’re afraid I won’t be able to help you anymore?” Flynn had got back to his defensive stance and Wyatt didn’t even blame him. He wouldn’t want to talk about it either. It was still hard to talk about Jessica and Flynn had been through so much worse.
“No.”
Flynn scoffed. “Right. You never wanted me on your missions anyway. You would be happy if I wouldn’t want to go anymore.”
Wyatt really tried not to get affected by Flynn’s aggressive words but this man always hit a special spot. So he just stood up. “I just wanted to make sure you’re okay but forget about it. You don’t want to talk, I get it. Have a good night.” With that he stood up and was about to leave the kitchen when he heard a quiet “Thanks, Wyatt”.
Wyatt stopped for a second, a smile forming on his lips before he left for good.
