After all those long hours in their lions it was nice to sleep on an actual planet with actual air and cool breezes. Still, Lance woke up pretty early. He tried to lie in another position and to return to sleep but everything he tried failed. So after a little restless moving he got up and moved over to the near lake.
This planet was really beautiful and it reminded Lance a lot of Earth. He couldn’t wait to get back home, even if it would still take a long long time.
Unsurprisingly he wasn’t the first of the group that was awake.
He sat down next to Keith with a smile. “Couldn’t sleep?”
Keith let out a long sigh. Lance didn’t expect him to answer his question, therefore he was extremely surprised when Keith actually did and even with something more than an one word answer. “Sometimes I think there is so much happening all at once that we rarely get a break. And then when we take the time to actually stop for a moment and to take a breath my body can’t shut down. I only slept two or three hours.”
Lance blinked at him, completely dumbstruck for a moment. First of all, he hadn’t known that Keith was actually capable of stringing together so many words, secondly, he rarely had heard Keith talk about personal feelings and thoughts. And last, he would never talk with Lance about this stuff. So he looked around, made sure that no one else was around. “You’re aware that I’m not Shiro?” Then he waggled with his hand in front of Keith’s face. “Or are you sleepwalking?” Lance leaned forward a little so that he could see Keith’s face. “Are you asleep?”
Keith pushed Lance’s hand away. “Shut it, Lance,” he grumbled in his usual stoic voice, pulled his legs closer and rested his head on his knees.
Lance pouted for a moment but seeing Keith in such a vulnerable position he realized that at the moment maybe it wasn’t the time for jokes. “You’re always worried, Keith. That’s probably the reason why your body doesn’t shut down. You’re always thinking of the worst and you’re afraid that even out here on such a beautiful and peaceful planet something could happen to us.”
“It’s ridiculous,” Keith mumbled.
“Yeah, of course it is. You can’t worry the whole time. You have to allow yourself some quiet times too. We need you to be awake and sharp. If you’re tired you’ll make mistakes.”
“That’s why I have you at my side. To call me out when I’m being stupid.”
Once again Lance just blinked at Keith, completely baffled about those words, about Keith’s honesty. It had to be the sleep deprivation. There was no other explanation for it. Of course they got along better. They were a pretty good team out there and they respected each other. Lance knew since the day that the Black Lion chose Keith that Keith was made for this and he grew into his role. Lance was really proud of Keith, although he would never admit that. And that was the point. They respected each other and could work well in battle but the rest of the time they still bickered and pretended to hate each other. So this conversation right now put Lance really off track. He didn’t know how to handle this. He didn’t know how to handle a vulnerable Keith.
Lance took a deep breath. If Keith wanted to be serious, Lance wouldn’t fall back. He would never lose to Keith, not even in an emotional filled conversation. “So I say now, you’re being stupid. Just lie down and sleep. I can see clearly how exhausted you are.”
“It’s not that easy, Lance. Don’t you think I tried?” Keith sounded really frustrated which convinced Lance that Keith had probably tried several times to fall asleep that night. Was that the first night or did he had trouble sleeping the previous nights as well? That wasn’t good. They really needed him rested. He was the team leader. They all counted on him. But still, even the team leader needed a shoulder on which he could lean on from time to time.
“I’ll look out for them.”
Keith looked up, now he was blinking.
“You’re scared that something happens while you’re asleep, right?”
“No, not really.”
Lance shook his head. “Your body is though, so don’t argue. I’ll look after them, okay? You trust me with them, don’t you?”
Lance felt relieved when Keith didn’t hesitate a second to nod. There were so many times where Lance felt like nothing or not good enough for this team. He was the dumb one. The one with the jokes. He wasn’t the best at anything. But lately he’d been convinced that he found his place in this team. He could protect Keith’s back and support him as the team leader.
“So you can rest. There’s nothing stopping you now.”
Keith let out a little laugh. “You think that these are some magic words and I just fall to sleep?”
Lance shrugged. “Maybe. I don’t know how this works. Maybe we should ask Coran if he knows any magical potions or-”
“No, please, don’t.”
Lance grinned. “Or maybe we could just watch the sunrise together and hope that you’ll fall asleep?”
Keith shook his head but Lance didn’t miss the little smile on his lips. “That won’t work.”
“You can’t say that if you haven’t tried it.”
“Okay, then let’s try.”
Lance knew that this was a stupid idea. He just wanted Keith to stop worrying for a minute and just relax and somehow that had actually worked. The first sun was not fully over the horizon yet when he felt a weight on his shoulder. Keith had tumbled to the side when he fell asleep and leaned completely on Lance now.
“Oh, you old sap, Keith,” Lance whispered and continued watching the three sunrises of this beautiful planet that bathed their surroundings in a sharp orange light.
