It had sounded like a good idea. In his head it had sounded like a good idea. Actually Wyatt had been so convinced that he pleaded and argued with Lucy for hours so that he could come with.
Now he wasn’t so sure anymore. Standing here in front of this dirty window of this scabby bar, just watching, was unbearable. Not being allowed to interact with him, to talk to him, to feel him, was just a cruel reminder of what he had lost.
Wyatt had hoped that this trip would give him some kind of closure. All that it did was memories of times that were long lost.
His Flynn was gone. His Flynn would never come back. His Flynn was only memories now. Happy, sad, joyful and frustrating memories.
This man in the bar who was sitting right next to Lucy wasn’t this man. Not yet. Still, it was the only thing that Wyatt had left and he’d kill for the opportunity to just say one word to him. He let out a frustrated sigh and turned around. He knew that he couldn’t. They couldn’t risk to mess up the past. Flynn had only talked about Lucy’s visit. Wyatt hadn’t been there so Wyatt had to stay in the background.
So he could only watch and die slowly inside all over again.
The day they had lost Flynn had been one of the worst days for Wyatt. He thought he’d be used to losing people he cared about. He had been grieving Jessica for years. He knew what it felt like. But Flynn had been different. He had been different in so many ways.
Losing him came so unexpected that Wyatt hadn’t even time to properly say goodbye. Maybe he had hoped that this would give him that now. But he had been wrong. It just opened old wounds. There was nothing here except pain and misery.
This fact also became so much clearer when Lucy stepped outside and rushed into his arms. She clung to him as if she was about to drown. Wyatt pulled her close and just held her. There was nothing else that he could do because he knew from own experience that no words would make this pain go away.
So he just held her in his arms, pulling her a little into the shadows of the building so that they wouldn’t be spotted. Wyatt though saw Flynn exit the bar and he felt the sudden urge to run over to him. Instead he pulled Lucy even closer.
“We can’t warn him?” He whispered, his voice shaking.
Lucy pressed full force against Wyatt’s chest. He felt his shirt getting wet. “No.”
Wyatt swallowed hard, wanted to argue with her. One little word, one little clue wouldn’t change anything but he knew himself. It could change everything and they couldn’t take this risk.
In the end they would change their entire past and the thought of Flynn never being in his life at all was more terrifying than what he felt right in this moment.
At least he got to know him. At least he got to love him.
Even if it hurt like hell.
