Ned had settled down with another book from the Commons’ library in the hope that it would offer some hints about how to walk through walls when there was a knock at the door. He didn’t expect anybody so late in the evening. Julian had announced that he would go and question one of his acquaintances about their problem. As he had put it the man was “an expert at getting behind closed doors”. When Ned had asked him why he didn’t just say burglar? Julian had just shrugged. He’d also warned Ned that it would be quite late before he came back and anyway it would be better if they slept separately now and then since neither of their landladies was that inattentive.
So when Ned opened the door and found Julian he was surprised, which turned to shock when he took in Julian’s state.
“Oh my God! What…” he decided that any questions could wait and he gently led Julian towards the couch and examined him closer in the light of the gaslamp.
“Let me get the blood off you.”
Moments later sat in front of Julian with a damp cloth and carefully cleaned his face. To Ned’s relief, it didn’t look as bad afterwards. A huge bruise had begun to form but the cuts had all stopped bleeding.
“Anything else?”
Julian gestured towards his stomach and groaned. “A couple of punches. I’m sure all my organs are still where they’re supposed to be. But…it hurts.”
He gently stroked Julian’s hair, “I’ll get you something.”
In the kitchen, he filled a glass with water, wrote down the necessary sigils and waited for them to dissolve. He cursed silently. It would take a while until the potion was ready. But of course, he could just…he grabbed another glass.
Less than a minute later he handed it to Julian who stared at the contents that turned from red to green to purple to yellow and back.
“You…used to make that back at school.”
It was an easy potion to make which was why even 12-year-old school-boys where trusted with it. The actual pain-relief effect was minimal which meant there was next to no chance of messing it up and accidentally creating something dangerous. The thought seemed to be that children would be distracted enough by the colours to forgot the pain.
“You’ll get a proper one soon but it needs a bit longer.”
Julian grimaced and downed the cup.
“I remember that tasting differently at school,” he grinned.
“Possibly because I never put Gin in that.”
“Can you tell me what happened now?”
Julian shrugged and then winced. Ned placed a calming hand on his shoulder.
“There is not too much to tell. Two guys jumped me and told me to keep away from they Hyde case.”
“So…we apparently have them worried.”
“Seems like it. It would be nice if we had done something to justify that but my friend was just as unhelpful when I explained the circumstances. He said unless we missed a secret passage…” he was about to shrug again but remembered and abandoned his movement halfway through and instead cursed not-so-silently.
Ned got up. “I’ll get you the proper pain potion.”

Muahaha. Wundervoll. :)
