The sun is setting low on the horizon, tinting the waves golden and casting a soft, orange glow on everything. Percy is sitting on the surf shop’s front porch, his toes buried in the still warm sand and tries desperately not to think.
He yelps as something ice cold is pressed into his neck, and Piper is smiling down on him, swinging the offending beer bottle just out of his reach.
„Stop thinking, before you hurt your pretty head, Jackson.“
„Fuck off, McLean.“
She sits down next to him, passing over the beer without a fuss and leans her head against his shoulder. „Leo’s going to stop by tomorrow, to take a look at the aircon.“
„I can’t pay him.“
„When have you ever?“ Which... fair enough. At this point, Valdez is just assembling store credit, and that is going to bite Percy in the ass if the mechanic ever decides to pick up surfing.
He takes a sip of the too cold beer and because he knows why Piper’s really here, he changes the topic before it can even come up: „Shouldn’t you be with the hodad?“
Piper chuckles. „I know I call him that, but Grace really isn’t suave enough to qualify…“
„Well, he does look great in a white t-shirt. Total babe.“
She picks at the label of her own beer, attempting to hide her foolishly bright smile. Percy would be disgusted, but McLean and Grace are adorable. And it’s not like Annabeth and he… And there is the thing that he really doesn’t need to talk about. Annabeth and he were a fucking cliché. Over-competitive highschool sweethearts headed straight for the white picket fence. Only, Annabeth is into girls and Percy… well. Percy really doesn’t want to think about any of this.
Piper throws him a sidelong glance as if she can see right through him. She propably can, it's disconcerting. „I’m here to brag about my shiny new boytoy and drink a few beers, Jackson, not for your pity party.“
He snorts. „Yeah, sure. You thrive on romantic drama.“
„Sure, but that’s why I’m friends with Leo. He’s currently trying to figure out whether he’s gay just because he’s in love with the hunk from vet school and, seriously, it’s giving me life.“
Percy raises an eyebrow, not sure how the conversation ended up here, but grateful nonetheless. „Haven’t they been banging for weeks?“ He’s pretty sure he’s walked in on the two of them making out in the board shed.
Piper grins like the fricking Cheshire Cat and raises her beer to him. „And there you go. I’m loving every second of it.“
„You’re awful.“
She shrugs, apparently unbothered. „Fair. – Want another one? I brought two sixers.“
„Sure. …And, McLean? Thank you.“
Getting up, Piper smacks him in the shoulder, a little harder than strictly necessary. „No need to thank me yet, wait until I tell you that Leo and the vet are actually dating the same girl on the side.“
