It took a moment until Dominic realised what had woken him. Once he did, he sat upright in his bed.
A scream.

A few moments later his brain had put all the pieces together. The scream had come from right next to him.

“Silas?”, he whispered.

Silas lay still. Too still to be actually asleep. He was a surprisingly uneasy sleeper and Dominic had considered it a minor miracle that the few nights they had slept in the same bed hadn’t resulted in another black eye for him.

“Silas?”, he said again, not whispering this time because he was now awake enough to realise that nobody was close enough to hear them, anyway. Silas still didn’t move, simply lay there, facing away from him.

“Did you have…” he stopped. Did you have nightmares? sounded so ridiculous. Somebody like Silas didn’t have nightmares.

“Did you sleep badly?” he tried. He was still talking to the back of Silas’ unmoving head.

How he had had enough. “I know you’re awake.”

“Yeah, how am I supposed to sleep if you don’t shut up?” He still didn’t turn around so he mumbled it into his pillow without looking at Dominic.

“Why did you wake up?” Dominic tried.

“Pillow’s too soft,” came the reply, still addressed to said pillow. “I’m used to straw and hard floorboards.”

“Well, you’re welcome to. There’s no straw but enough space on the floor.”

“Wouldn’t want to get Lord Vane’s floor dirty.”

Dominic opened his mouth to point out the ridiculousness of that statement but closed it when he realised that Silas was only trying to distract him. So he just hissed “Stop this.”

For a moment, nothing happened. Then Silas sat up while looking anywhere but at Dominic. He eventually settled on a spot near his ear that probably wouldn’t even have fooled Dominic if they hadn’t been sitting right next to each other.

Suddenly, he had no idea what to say.

“Do you need anything?”

“Nah. I’m good.”

Dominic suppressed a deep sigh and the urge to strangle Silas. Instead, he put a hand on Silas' arm. Silas didn’t protest but he still didn’t meet Dominic’s gaze and instead studied the wall.

It was idiotic. Silas wouldn’t talk and Dominic couldn’t bring himself to ask. Ask if his nightmares had anything to do with Silas’ past. The past they never openly acknowledged but was still obvious every time he saw Silas’ back.

Finally, Silas said something. So quietly that Dominic almost didn’t hear it.

“Harry.”

“What?”

“What would have happened to Harry if I’d been convicted?”

Oh. Of course. That hadn’t even occurred to Dominic. Mostly because if Silas had been convicted, he would have been executed and Harry would have been tainted by his acquaintance with a traitor. He might have been shunned in society but it would have been hard to fabricate a case against him that would hold up in a court of law. Harry wouldn’t have faced any physical consequences. No prison, no corporal punishments. It was unlikely that they would have had enough to even arrest Harry. Silas must know all these things and that’s why Dominic didn’t even bother with pointing them out. Instead, he moved closer to Silas.

“You weren’t. Harry’s safe.” You are safe.

“I know.” He let his head fall on Dominic’s shoulder. Dominic inched even closer and put his arm around him.

The silence stretched so long that he wondered if Silas had fallen asleep but then he talked again.

“I’m glad. I’m glad that Harry is fine.” He paused. Then almost inaudible “I’m glad that I’m alive.”

Dominic hugged him closer.

“And I’m very glad that you’re alive.”

Silas wasn't the type who would ever cuddle somebody so Dominic assumed that he was just trying to get in a more comfortable sitting position and in the process hugged him back. Or he wanted to come even closer so that Dominic could understand what he whispered in his ear.

“I love you too.”
