Leonard had been hiding in a corner, hoping that no one would notice him and drag him back to all those stilted conversations, when suddenly someone grabbed his arm and turned him around. It was Jim.
“He’s here!” Jim said in a whisper.
Leonard smiled, almost about to ask if he was talking about an angry ex or maybe just someone he had a huge crush on a long time ago but something in Jim’s demeanor let Leonard stop himself. “Who’s here?” he asked instead.
“What’s he doing here? Why did he came?” Jim seemed erratic and Leonard didn’t need his medical tricorder to know that Jim’s heart probably danced some hip hop right now.
“Hey, hey, calm down, Jim,” Leonard said in a soothing voice while scanning the crowd. There were a lot of people here. Most of them Leonard didn’t know. The few he knew were no one that rang any alarm bells. Jim was on good terms with them.
Jim grabbed Leonard’s other arm as well and squeezed tightly. A little too tight for Leonard’s taste. A clear indicator that something was truly wrong. And Leonard started to worry. “Just tell me who you’re talking about.”
Jim shook his head. “I can’t - I can’t face him. I-”
“Okay, okay, let’s get you away.” Leonard tried to lead Jim a little further away from the crowd to get this sorted out more privately. He just took one of the hallways that were dark so probably no one would be around there. Before that though he threw a last glance over to the crowd. “You’re mother’s here?” he asked and wished he hadn’t. A jolt went through Jim. His grip got even tighter and he just stopped, standing completely still and just looking lost. His breathing started to get erratic.
Leonard took a deep breath as well. “Listen to me, Jim, just listen to my voice. You don’t need to face him. We’ll just go. You don’t need to see him.” Leonard had seen Jim like this only on one or two occasions and he knew now for sure who Jim had been talking about. The fact that his mother was there as well tipped Leonard off although he had no fricking clue why Frank should be here. He’d never gave a damn about Jim or his brother-in-law. This celebration shouldn’t interest him in any way. Except he wanted to mess with Jim once again and Leonard could feel the anger rise inside of him. He had the sudden urge to walk back into the big hall and punch this idiot straight in the face but Jim needed him right now.
“What’s he doing here?” Jim asked again and for the first time actually looked into Leonard’s eyes.
Leonard swallowed around a lump in his throat. “No idea but don’t bother. He’s not worth it. Do you hear me? He’s a scumbag who doesn’t deserve that you waste a single thought about him. Let’s just get out of here and forget about him.”
Jim shook his head. “Can’t move.”
“Okay, then we just sit down here for a moment.” He gently guided Jim to the ground and sat right next to him. Leonard didn’t try to get Jim to talk and he decided he said enough for the moment. Jim didn’t seem like he was able to truly understand the meaning behind Leonard’s words. He was too lost in his memories right now.
“I bet he’s here to tell me that I only became Captain ‘cause of my name. Kirk.”
“Something like that probably, yeah,” Leonard commented. “But you know this isn’t true, right?” Leonard turned a little to be able to look at Jim. He studied him intensely. “It isn’t true. Nothing what Frank ever said to you is. You matter. You’re someone. Hell, Jim, you’re the best damn thing that ever happened to me.”
“But he’s family.”
“Maybe but family shouldn’t treat family like that. You’ve got a new family now. A family that adores and respects you. A family that would die for you. You even befriended Spock and your relationship started with him abandoning you on a planet and then almost choking you to death. And even he realized what an incredible person you are, Jim. You’re amazing. Never think anything less. And you deserved this promotion. You saved us all.”
All of a sudden Jim slung his arms around Leonard and pushed himself closer to him. “I love you, Bones. I love you so much.”
Leonard pulled him closer and gave him a kiss on his head, a small smile on his lips. “I love you, too, Jim.”
