Challenge: "Wann hast du das letzte Mal...?"
Fandom: Stargate SG-1/Atlantis
Charaktere: Cameron Mitchell, John Sheppard

Cameron Mitchell had a tendency to collect strays. It had been public knowledge at flight school that if you didn't have anywhere to go for the holidays, there was a farm in Kansas with open doors, a ridiculous amount of pie and enough family that no one would notice you showing up unannounced.

Naturally, John had never taken up the unspoken offer. They had hardly known each other and John hadn't been that lonely.

However, he wasn't exactly surprised when years later, Mitchell waltzed into his make-shift Cheyenne Mountain quarters and announced that John should pack a few nice and cozy sweaters.

"I don't mind staying on base for the holidays." He really didn't mind, not more than being stuck on Earth anyway.

Mitchell shrugged. "Sure, but I do. And my grandma always used to say: No point in upsetting someone who could use his incredibly bad standing with the IOA to your disadvantage." He waved his hand around vaguely. "Obviously, I'm paraphrasing."

"So this is an order?"

"Naah", Mitchell drawled. "This is extortion. No one follows my orders anyway."

And that was how John Sheppard ended up on the passenger seat of Mitchell's Shelby. He let himself slouch into the cushions as much as the bucket seats let him and didn't say a word until the engine had settled into a low growl on the freeway.

"So, airport or road trip?" He hadn't asked before because, frankly, he really didn't want to know. Or be here, in this car, on this planet, in this galaxy. He missed Atlantis so much it physically hurt.

Mitchell looked at him thoughtfully. "Now you're giving me ideas. Really, it's only like a nine hour drive..."

Nine hours in a car with a guy you barely know, John thought but he didn't say anything as the good colonel was apparently hell bent on spending Christmas with a guy he barely knew and he had no idea why.

"Nine hours of rocky roadsides and eventually corn fields? Lovely."

"Don't have those in Pegasus, do they?" Mitchell was grinning like a lunatic and overplayed his Southern drawl. John rolled his eyes.

"Seriously, Shep, when was the last time you did something like this?"

John raised an eyebrow. "Something like this?" His last road trip had been before Afghanistan. His last road trip to meet someone's parents had been a year before he got married to that someone. And at least he'd known more about Nancy at that point than her job description and her favourite football team.

"You know, something ridiculously and stupidly spontaneous."

"Does stepping through a stargate into a different galaxy count?"

Mitchell laughed. "Sure."

John stared out the window as they drove past the exit leading to the airport, smiling despite himself.
